    Pros

I entered the agency right out of college as a Jr. Copywriter, and was immediately thrown into some huge opportunities to grow as a creative. Between new business pitches, social media content, TV campaigns and day-to-day client work, a writer at Masterminds gets to touch virtually everything.

Like in any agency setting, proactivity pays off. Stay nosey and you will continually be brought into new things. Soon enough, you'll find yourself traveling for shoots and taking on more of a leadership role. You will also get support from management for your side projects, especially if it's something that could benefit agency culture and PR.

    Other Pros:
    - Free dinner and beer when you work late.
    - Every day is Bring Your Dog (Or Your Kid) To Work Day — as long as nobody has an allergy to either.
    - There is a humble "small business" vibe, even when the agency has 50+ employees.
    - People still know how to make stuff by hand. "Server down" does not equal panic mode.

You have freedom to change the agency for the better (or at least, try to) if you've got the balls to see it through.

    Cons

There's a history of power imbalance between Creative Dept and Account Services. Over the course of 3 years at Masterminds, I recall having a Creative Director for 13 months. While I learned a great deal from the creative leaders I did work under — and there are some damn good Account and Strategy folks who are inherently creative too — something's rotten in Denmark if an agency floats captainless for months on end.

If you see this as an opportunity to step up, you will do fine. If you relentlessly fight the good fight for beautiful work, you will win battles. But too many creative staff members have thrown in the towel and think they'll "never do great work like those other agencies." Morale hangs notoriously low at Masterminds. It's unfortunate, because there are some seriously talented people who have given up the fight.

    Advice to Management

Hire a Creative Director who wants to move the agency forward, and let them.

Slash and burn the dead crops.

Don't be a "casino marketing specialist." Just be a creative agency.

When the new business starts rolling in, consider increasing salaries across the board.

    Pros

Masterminds is a great place to really build a book as a designer or writer, especially when you are starting out. I started out as an intern there and got to work on a real campaign that helped me land a job and write copy for an ADDY award-winning campaign.

You will work hard here, but the people there make it fun and as I said, you will get to really contribute and have your say, which is not something bigger agencies will deliver. The people are great and talented. I looked forward to going to work just about every day.

    Cons

Like most agencies I've worked at, as creatives you have to fight for the ideas you believe in.

You will work long hours, but that's also common in the industry. You'll get free dinner and booze if you work late.

    Pros

Higher ups really care about their employees like family. Great place to grow as a creative and learn to stay in the strategy box at the same time. Crazy talented new senior creatives were just hired and are really going to push the envelope. Free booze!! And as much St. Germaine as you can drink, if you're into that sort of thing.

Best location in the city to work.

    Cons

    Account run shop. Time sheets....

    Advice to Management

Keeping rock n' rollin! Think about expanding your portfolio outside of hospitality and travel/leisure. Don't ever lose sight of the culture. Trust in your creatives!!

    Pros

Well, it's 'advertising' shop in the city, so at least there are a ton of great lunch spots within walking distance. They also have a Kegerator, wood, and bathrooms...sort of.

    Cons

Constant mismanagement of talent. Poor office communication. Poor client relations. Have advice on how to improve daily work flow - No one cares, keep your head down and follow the rest off the cliff.

If your late in your career and want a place to veg out with copious amounts of stress, give this place a chance. If you're a Young Hungry Creative, treat yourself better and get your training and first couple years elsewhere. This place is like twilight zone meets bizarro world, and I don't mean in the good 'Tim & Eric' sort of way.

    Advice to Management

Talk to your employees, or enjoy the imminent exodus.

    Pros

New office in Philly is really kicking butt. Watch out for these guys, they are going to be big. They recently hired a bunch of new talent and won some new accounts. They are turning out better work than ever.

    Cons

Like any company that is in expansion mode, there are some growing pains.

    Pros

Masterminds employs a lot of young talented people who treat each other well. Flexible start times, free coffee, meals after hours.

    Cons

The company unfortunately has no leadership, so the young talent is wasted. There is no job security or loyalty. Management would rather hire - train - layoff - hire - train - layoff, and so on, than build a solid, experienced team. Morale is desperately low. Clients are continually firing us.

    Advice to Management

Hold yourselves accountable for your job responsibilities. Stop laying off the people who are doing the work and start looking inward. The powers that be should be pounding the pavement networking and getting new business and if they aren't than they should be the ones who are replaced.

    Pros

Nice and warm in the winter and cool in the summer with not much going for it in between. The bathrooms were always clean and the parking was free.

    Cons

Overbearing account executives were always backed by management so the creative process suffered. True groundbreaking ideas from any source were rarely accepted. Talented people never lasted long.

    Advice to Management

Go back to working in the casinos. That's where your talents will be appreciated.

    Pros

Relaxed atmosphere, free 1/2 cup of coffee a day, sometimes free soda, free water (but must bring your own cup!), most of the time electricity is on.

    Cons

Expects more work then a normal 40-50 hour work week, which is normal and would be OK here if there were any type of competent workflow. Management expects you to keep track of your every 15 minutes via a web program that works only half the time. Used to have great computer support, but now has one of the top execs son trying to fix things with the help of some dingy outside computer support place (good luck keeping your files and computer). Management promotes themselves as being internet 'savy' to their clients, but they are not, be prepared to do a lot of double talk to clients about this. Expect to be frowned upon when requesting any time off.

    Advice to Management

Go back to what you were good at, non-internet related advertising. Stop this hiring of top execs relatives in place of professionals. Take the cue from other top agencies and be honest to your clients. Completely replace your financial department with real MBA professionals. Give your employees more then just free water if they bring in a cup on a daily basis.

    Pros

Steady paycheck for about 6 months before you get laid off.

    Cons

Company has suffered a brain drain over the last 10 years, allowing all the great creative talent (that could have taken them to the next level they want to be at now) to either leave or actually laid them off. A place where accountants have more say over creative than the CD/AD, and the designated leads in the creative department are inept & pompous, with absolutely zero relevant work to show for themselves in which to have their respective titles.

    Advice to Management

    Advice won't help.
