From a company standpoint they are stable. They have great resources at your disposal.
Cons
You definitely have to drink the koolaid here and kiss all the right butts. Senior management makes all the decisions. Even if you do a great job that will be overlooked if you aren't kissing Sr. Managements butt. They have a sense of arrogance that I never saw when I was there but on the outside people know this and it's a knock on the company. Get ready to jump through hoops if you want to be hired there. You may even be lied to more than once.

They make an poular and world-wide used product. Life and work are well-balanced. Good communications among employees. Processes are reasonable and transparent.

I do not have much to write in cons. maybe lack of many self-improvement opportunites and not very high salary?

The company is doing very well i think. Not much advice here. Keep going Mathworks! Many people think this is a good place to work.

Lack of career growth opportunities. This is a big drawback if you are on a fast career track.
Very limited telecommuting allowed.

Develop leadership skills; technical competency is not leadership
Bring back telecommuting (many high tech companies advertise this as a benefit)

Please please take some trainings! An accomplished programmer does NOT make a good manager. Bring real mangers on board

lots of products to learn. Talented engineers at your service. Friendly interaction between teams. Learning from the best at the best in each industry... Individuals care. Culture and environment used to be great... No more idea zones and places to do creative thinking as a group.
Cons
Work from home policy is horrendous. 3 days a year? That's ridiculous. No reason given, just want to have control. Trust your employees..
Lack of advancement. Sr Management have their pets and they see these individuals through the ranks. Promotions are rare, but not for your pet. Whatever you want is what they say.
Layoffs are termed "Job eliminations"... Call a spade a spade.... Wake up and give more opportunity to these talented individuals. I see when the economy picks up, you will certainly be sorry for losing some terrific people to other companies.

Shake up the Management team. Get some advice from the individuals instead of the usual. Listen to new ideas. CEO and Sr VPs should let others do their jobs. Stop getting involved in the small stuff. Worry about how to grow the company and continue to make a bigger profit. If you dont want to guide the company, sell it to someone who does. Stop trying to be the Engineers that you used to be.
Pros
Working at MathWorks feels like an extension of grad school. The work atmosphere is laid back, hours are flexible, the engineering work force come from a variety of interesting backgrounds. Management tends to be very rational and respectful, and many managers are open to new ideas if you can make the business case. Salaries are comparatively low, but it's all about the side perks. Great products that I am proud of selling/supporting.
Cons
Telecommuting policy or 0-3 days reinforced recently -- many days there is no reason to go to campus, but now it is required. Too many homegrown and cobbled-together tools for day-to-day use at work.

Ease telecommuting policy, allow some mobility in the work force.

If your goals are to have good work/life balance, do interesting work, and be part of a successful company with market leading products, The MathWorks is tough to beat. But if you are looking for more than that, you will be left wanting.

Consensus-driven approach can sometimes paralyze decision-making.
The Company is rigidly inflexible when it comes to working remotely in a misguided effort to maintain the corporate culture.
Career development is really lacking; the better one is at his/her job, the longer one can expect to stay in that job.
Some long-timers in middle-management are punching the clock.

You have great products, markets, and work environment, but lots of undertutilized talent at your disposal. Make an effort to find those most capable, challenge them to do more, and reward them for their efforts. The result will be beyond your expectations.
