ProsThe people are wonderful and diverse. Many have worked there for many years. In order for Mattel to have such a large company in the area, LA made them work around the heavy LAX traffic - therefore half day Fridays. Mattel is generous to their employees in many ways.

ConsEverything goes up the chain to one person, therefore there is a lot of paranoia and constant changing of plans. Sadly, Mattel gets in its own way a lot and can move very slowly. The smaller upstart toy companies often get the products on the shelf more quickly at a lower cost.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease trust the creative people you take so much care in recruiting and placing. It's soul crushing to have years of work killed in one hour because mothers in Long Beach "didn't get it." Take a good look at who your managers are and what they are capable of. There are a lot of people coasting and some great folks who are going unrecognized. The corporate structure needs a re-org.

    Great Experience

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsI was an intern there for a few months in a small department. Could totally sense more drama going on in larger departments. I had lots of fun with a lot of toys in the office. People are generally nice and talented. Half-day Fridays are the best. I learned a lot from the internship and have met some great people. Would love to work there again if I have the chance to.

    ConsMore drama in larger departments

Mattel is a great place to work, filled with creative people.

ProsHalf day Fridays, good benefits, global company, competitive industry keeps the politics down.

ConsThere is not a strong push for innovation in products, there seems to be a strong block to transferring to different deparmrnts and divisions.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to the innovative ideas of all employees, try to capture them

Great if you have a family. Sucks if you're single.

    Senior Analyst (Former Employee)

ProsGreat company. Classic products. Great discount on toys. Half day Fridays! A lot of great people to work with. Onsite cafeteria/gym/dry cleaning are great.

ConsThere's a lot of office politics involved. Very dynamic environment. No standard procedure. Different "exceptions" for different accounts. Being single and working there, I feel that I have to cover for other people more often. Also feel that people w/o families get laid off first.

You get to work on everything!

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsGreat management (in my case). I learned everything from concept design to finished on the shelf toy. Brainstorm weeks are fun and inspiring. You come out with a lot more skills and an open door to other companies. They have day care and Christmas & Halloween are a blast. It's a giving company.

ConsBig corporate environment that's not design driven. A lot of long meetings.
