I have been working at Mattel full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Half day Fridays, good benefits, global company, competitive industry keeps the politics down.

    Cons

There is not a strong push for innovation in products, there seems to be a strong block to transferring to different deparmrnts and divisions.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the innovative ideas of all employees, try to capture them

Mattel is having a huge impact on Fisher-Price and the cultural implications of that are not good.

I have been working at Mattel full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

From a benefits perspective we receive generous time off (company shutdown for the December holiday break) and half day Fridays. Also you can't beat working on toys for a living!

    Cons

Management's words dictate one direction but their actions show another. The culture is also changing on the East Aurora campus from one of mutual support to one where individuals will be petty in order to be noticed and therefore promoted.

    Advice to Management

Your actions should back up what you say.

I worked at Mattel full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Excellent benefits; Good vacation time; 10 days off at Christmas; Half-day Fridays; Fitness center; Cafeteria; Discount cards for Toy store (for friends & family); and the people are amazing!

    Cons

--Mattel does not understand the culture at Fisher-Price, nor have they tried. By virtue of the products they make, FP has to market to moms, and Mattel has never, ever figured out how different that is than selling to older kids. --The El Segundo HQ has always looked-down their noses at the Fisher-Price campus, making us feel perpetually like unwanted step-children. --The brand has not changed with the times, and is dying. Cuts to marketing budgets did not give the relaunch of the brand the best chance to flourish, and they haven’t given it enough time to work. So what do they do? Reorganize! (They reorganize every 18 to 24 months.) --The brand is no longer relevant because a handful of SVPs have micro-managed product and marketing to point that nothing is new or fresh. --The disparity between senior management and staff is significant, and most people do not feel as if top management knows what’s going on. --If you know somebody or happen to have a supportive boss, then you get promoted. If your boss checked-out years ago and is waiting for his “package,” then you go nowhere. --Mattel keeps saying they are committed to staying in East Aurora, NY (where Fisher-Price was founded), yet they keep chipping away at the functions housed there piece by piece. The last 6 or 7 years have been hellish. --I predict Mattel will shut-down the East Aurora campus , and that as a brand, Fisher-Price will become meaningless.

    Advice to Management

--First and foremost, stop trying to mold Fisher-Price into your idea of what a toy company should be. It doesn't fit and it never has. Give them the tools, money and time to do their own thing and see if it works, because what you've implemented has not worked! --There is a group of long-standing senior management that needs to go! --Provide adequate resources instead of heaping more and more work on fewer and fewer people. --Actually train managers to manage people properly. --Add some fun back into the workplace. (It’s a toy company; it’s supposed to be fun!) --And guys, if you do decide to move the brand to California, do it soon and spare a lot of really good people the anguish of lay-off rumors every other week.

I have been working at Mattel part-time

    Pros

Having a job at this time Some discounts at toy stores and some companies

    Cons

Only part-time Have to be a fmaily member, know someone well, or be one of the click to get a 30 to 40 hour a weel job. Then an only then your numbers better be up there or you can't even bid on a job.

    Advice to Management

This is about working at the East Auroa, NY campus. Miss the happy times in consumer relations where you cold take to a peer, enjoyed the contests, parties, etc. But now, it is gone. The Consumer Relations department has turned into a Call Center. Now we have to clock ourselves to go to the bathroom, while the rest of the site can go without being regulated. It is sad as the Consumer Relations, takes care of the entire country and Canada and we are treated so poorly. There was much higher production when we were under different management. Current Management of the CR department has really gone down, have people that have never worked in a Consumer Relations department (from Bank, Grocery Store) now making this a true call center with very low pay, and what ever they say goes. Maybe you need to sit in and take the calls and be clocked for bathroom and break privileges. Remember you only get about 5 minutes over 1 hour in a 9 hour day and NO BREAKS after 5:00 pm EST. See if you can hold it like so many of have to and then be in tears as your bladder is about to explode and if we leave the floor and go over by 1 second we fail the schedule adherence.

    Pros

excellent corporate culture, growing company, growth opportunity for the employees at the lower level. The top management is always looking for opportunities to grow.

    Cons

at mid and senior level the growth is really limited and will take a long time to make it beyond the current level

    Advice to Management

I think as of now, the management is making all the right moves and is heading in the right direction

    Pros

The company as a whole has good policies about how employees should be treated. Christmas party was amazing.

    Cons

Despite the good policies of the company they are not followed out well at this location in the call center. The management treated staff as if they were stupid and were very unavailable.

    Advice to Management

Listen to employees. Do no treat them as if they are stupid or incompetent. Take pride in helping employees to succeed.

    Cons

Political types get ahead quickly Too often hire from the studios Getting very top heavy. More and more VP's and less worker bees

    Advice to Management

Recognize strategic value of IT and don't treet as a body shop. Be careful in promoting those who are political and focus only on those who produce.
