    Pros

Great benefits package: half day Fridays throughout the year, 13 holidays plus week between Christmas and New Years off, 401K contribution even if you don't, 4% 401K match contribution if you contribute 6%, restricted stock and stock options for directors and above, access to a host of online education courses. Financially stable and generally invest in the betterment/education of the workforce both at the staff and management level.

    Cons

Depending upon your position can require a significant amount of travel. Do more with less resources but expect the same output as before...leads to long hours. Not flexible enough on telecommuting. Too many exceptions to the rule depending upon which department you work in. Inconsistency of senior leadership across the board. Management committee can be indecisive on making strategic business decisions.

    Advice to Management

Be less litigious and more creative in your business decisions. Be more open during layoffs...everyone generally knows anyway.

    Pros

    1) Fast moving and growing creates opportunities 2) Everyone knows your business so long lasting discussions with friends and other contacts 3) Far ahead of everyone in methods, processes, technology, globalization and many other issues. I have worked for very big recognizable companies that are years behind Mattel in these areas. 4) The people are challenging, direct, a bit abrasive, brilliant and unafraid of taking risks. 5) If you deliver and perform and "toot" your own horn you will be recognized and rewarded.. 7) By far the most creative group of people I have ever worked with. Everyday was a discovery of something exciting. They are merging technology with creativity and creating new play patterns that are exciting. In the cons there is a huge challenge.

    Cons

    1) Long hours and if you travel you can be gone a long time 2) The most political company I ever worked for. In my situation I was lucky, I had a very high level mentor and protector. 3) This is the worst, people who are high performers and do not sell themselves every day are not recognized. I had to dig to find them and then train them to sell themselves. 4) It is possible to be capable of selling yourself and not capable of delivering and get rewarded over those who deliver. 3) and 4) go together. 5) The toy business is shrinking and being replaced by the electronics consumer products and services. Mattel is slow to react. They should be a leader. Mattel's electronic debacle of the 1970s is still remembered by the board and is shunting their growth 6) They have yet to figure out what to do with "tween girls. 7-12 year old girls in the USA and all of Europe dramatically reduced their play time with toys and have increased their purchases of teen like products and services. They must solve this problem. There are some 30 million girls in this age group. A country by itself.

    Advice to Management

The board of directors is well balanced. Five years from now the world will not look like it does now and there will be major changes in a child's play pattern. As a strategy, Mattel needs to get out in front of these changes to seize the market. Right now they appear to be one to two years behind. I give you one example. Steven Jobs and the iPhone. Think about what Apple did outside of its comfort zone in a crowded market with huge competition. In two years they took a huge market share. Mattel of the old days, used to do that.

    Pros

Mattel has good benefits, amenities and is in a great location. There is a lot of energy, and an atmosphere of dedication among the intelligent and vibrant employees.

    Cons

Mattel asks a lot of its employees. There is a lot of work which needs to be done, often on tight schedules, with minimal staffing. Layoffs are not uncommon.

    Advice to Management

Mattel needs to spend a lot more time and effort on training its supervisors how to be supervisors, and how to be motivators. There needs to be emphasis put on being good managers, not just getting the work done.

    Pros

It's on Fortune Magazine's top 100 places to work in the USA for a reason... Leadership, respect given to employees, willingness to change if requested and alot more than that.

    Cons

Being employed by a toy company isn't something worth boasting to friends & family. Other than that, nothing else was bad!

    Advice to Management

Please make it easier for loss prevention to do it's job by putting up sensors at the door and more video cameras. There are so many blind spots in the store that it's so easy to steal!!

    Pros

Senior management takes the company's "Play" values seriously, resulting in an ethical company that respects its employees. Year round half-day Fridays are even better than they sound!! Imagine working overtime and still leaving the office at 2pm!! Great brands that you can that you can get excited about and in an industry that is comparatively resistent to economic downturn. A very fast paced, dynamic company culture that gets addicting. Once you are at Mattel, it is hard to leave. Growth internationally shows promise for some cool career opportunities. Encourages internal rotation.

    Cons

A past history of lay-offs leaving things a little too lean at the lower levels. Political in some areas, but has improved over the last few years. Hard to get in.

    Advice to Management

Communication is king. So many of the recent moves are the right thing to do, but may be misunderstood. Keep your employees in the loop with the "what" and the "why" and they will support you. Avoid any significant workforce reductions at all costs. It really is a morale killer. We need more new brands like Monster High!!!

    Pros

Mattel works in teams with each member of the team working on the whole project. The atmosphere is one of encouraging innovative solutions to the challenges presented. Pay is commiserate to the local market. Benefits are some of the best around in private industry.

    Cons

Certain times of the year are frantic and require overtime. This is a function of the toy business and the need to have the majority of the product line to be brand new every year. Being such a large company, you don't get the opportunity to know many of the people outside of your business unit.

    Pros

Benefits, people, talent, culture, fair company, in general it is a great company to work for and people are very nice, after all it's a toy company!

    Cons

Changes, changes, changes, new clusters each 2 years, outsourcing, organizational changes etc. It could bring new opportunities to few, for others it will mean lay off, relocations, etc

    Advice to Management

Even thou it happens on many companies, try not to fall into to much burocrasy, politics, etc. Mattel needs to innovate more, keep up with technology and always remember to stay true to their core values, other than that very satisfied
