    Pros

    Brand Leaders. Exciting Marketing ideas

    Cons

everything run on a spreadsheet. Systems surprisingly antiquated. Sales force made up of old school sales guys/gals. Same worklife balance/flexibility not found in the field.

    Pros

From a design standpoint, you get to work on really cool things that will go out all over the world. Most people are very nice and down to earth.

    Cons

Upper Management is too far removed both from their workers, and from what is relevant these days. Too much emphasis on the money- taking risks is unheard of.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire younger, more clued in people. Realize that you have to break the mold sometimes to succeed. Barbie isn't going anywhere anymore. It's time for change.

    Pros

Smart, creative people making toys! Half day Fridays, good benefits, good salary. It's a large company so that means some growth potential if you want to learn about other aspects of the business.

    Cons

Constant re-orgs and confusion about direction. never enough transparency. Management is terrible. feels like it takes forever to get anything done. too many people need to approve every tiny decision. annual layoffs. many great employees are temps and they don't get benefits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

stop allowing higher level management to travel so much, so expensively, when we are all being told to cut back on everything. let decisions be made without so much insane scrutiny. presentation decks should be banned. people spend 95% of their time creating decks that no one looks at. too many meetings and too much approval needed from every level of management. empower people to make local decisions and you'll see better results.

I have been working at Mattel as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Nice people overall. Fun brands to work on. Fairly good work/life balance. Big company=big budgets on projects.

    Cons

I was a temp here for 3 years and never given a staff job despite stellar reviews from internal clients and lots of success in my dept. I blame blatant self preservation tactics of management (eliminate threats) and general stinginess of company for benefits. LOTS of "perma temps" at Mattel that get NO paid time off.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Review temps on a regular basis and if they are good, give them the staff position they deserve. Even if that means cutting dead weight from existing staff. Or at least give them some sick days for crying out loud!

I worked at Mattel full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great employee discounts, nice perks including a good fun day of corporate play

    Cons

If you want to get a role in politics this place is for you! Be sure to get in with the right people and fake it well as that is what matters the most. All razzle and no substance gets you ahead...and it is okay to bold face lie to get what you want. In fact you will be promoted for it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees, reduce the work load before everyone runs for the hills...and stop valuing those who step on others to get ahead....look for the ones who are actually doing the work

I have been working at Mattel full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Summer Fridays every week (ends at 1pm)
    50% discount on toys
    Decent pay

    Cons

    Very political and hierarchical
Can't get anything done to really turn the company around
Execs more concerned with their bonuses and manipulating stock price than the company
Just a little cog in a huge decaying machine
Promotions are slow and process is not transparent
A lot of nepotism and favoritism
Don't really care about their employees
Promotion is about who you know and suck up to not about performance
    Long work hours

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Turn the company around
Stop paying your most senior executives such huge salaries and bonuses
Stop constantly reorganizing and restructuring - causes chaos

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook
