I worked at Mattel full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

halfday fridays, absolutely the best thing

lots of celebrations with free food, as long as you don't mind that people are being laid off while everyone is given cupcakes and dancers are hired

lots of clubs and charity work

    Cafeteria is decent

    Cons

The company is outdated and paranoid and doesn't really care about its people or understand its market. They haven't had a hit toy in ages and they're panicked. The organization is bloated, and the right hand doesn't know what the left is doing.

The day starts at 8AM, for real.

The company feels like a cult.

They reorg and lay people off all the time. If Christmas isn't good, don't go there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get your act together and trust your people. Stop wasting money with silly spending and too much bureaucracy, and invest in some new ideas.

I have been working at Mattel full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The fun, globally recognized brands and the half day Fridays

    Cons

Incredibly political and disjointed. Too big so no one talks to each other and the internal fighting leads to duplicated efforts and wasted time talking to ourselves/ selling in ideas internally.

I worked at Mattel full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Best reasons to work at Mattel is all the time off you get. Half day Fridays, a few extra days around the every holiday.
Wonderful co-workers (for the most part), in part because we all felt like we were living through a war together.

    Cons

Most political company outside of the studios. Old boys network where long timers get moved from job to job to avoid firing them, yet newcomers are given very little opportunity to shine or grow. Bad behavior by "the chosen ones" is rewarded on a consistent basis and the lack of ethics corporately is astonishing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You talk the talk, but do not walk the walk. "Play fairly" is a corporate mandate, yet not something lived by senior management. The turf battles over digital are ridiculous. Mattel does not invest in infrastructure during good years, but rather pays the board and Senior Execs massive bonuses. You've lost experienced, valuable people and you do not care. Mattel was a great company back in the day and I highly doubt they will ever return to their glory days.

I worked at Mattel full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Nice people, Friday half-days, decent food in the commissary.

    Cons

No training, poor management, long hours, idiotic way of recruiting new employees - it's all who you know, not what you know.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend more time training your staff and building a good team; spend less time trying to make yourself look good.

I worked at Mattel as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    -Time off policies are flexible
    -Family Friendly

    Cons

-Treat their freelancers like second class citizens
    -Tons of corporate politics
-No room for upward mobility in production

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It would be great to get reviewed on how the team is growing and how we can improve. In my time at Mattel, I only ever received negative feedback in the case of a misstep and rarely in a positive light. It would also be great if Mattel could give a clearer path of career growth as well as assigned responsibilities.
