I have been working at Mattel as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Nice people overall. Fun brands to work on. Fairly good work/life balance. Big company=big budgets on projects.

    Cons

I was a temp here for 3 years and never given a staff job despite stellar reviews from internal clients and lots of success in my dept. I blame blatant self preservation tactics of management (eliminate threats) and general stinginess of company for benefits. LOTS of "perma temps" at Mattel that get NO paid time off.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Review temps on a regular basis and if they are good, give them the staff position they deserve. Even if that means cutting dead weight from existing staff. Or at least give them some sick days for crying out loud!

I worked at Mattel full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great employee discounts, nice perks including a good fun day of corporate play

    Cons

If you want to get a role in politics this place is for you! Be sure to get in with the right people and fake it well as that is what matters the most. All razzle and no substance gets you ahead...and it is okay to bold face lie to get what you want. In fact you will be promoted for it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees, reduce the work load before everyone runs for the hills...and stop valuing those who step on others to get ahead....look for the ones who are actually doing the work

I have been working at Mattel full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Summer Fridays every week (ends at 1pm)
    50% discount on toys
    Decent pay

    Cons

    Very political and hierarchical
Can't get anything done to really turn the company around
Execs more concerned with their bonuses and manipulating stock price than the company
Just a little cog in a huge decaying machine
Promotions are slow and process is not transparent
A lot of nepotism and favoritism
Don't really care about their employees
Promotion is about who you know and suck up to not about performance
    Long work hours

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Turn the company around
Stop paying your most senior executives such huge salaries and bonuses
Stop constantly reorganizing and restructuring - causes chaos

I worked at Mattel full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Plenty of opportunities to move laterally allows to learn first-hand about different functional areas of the organization, and allows to change direction of one's career without leaving the current employer. In addition, I was really fortunate to work with a great group of people. Great work-life balance schedule.

    Cons

    Below industry average base pay.

I have been working at Mattel

    Pros

    Good benefits, half day Fridays

    Cons

Work-life balance becoming an issue. Too much focus on structure and systems is limiting innovation and efficiency. Salaries struggling to stay competitive with similar jobs in other companies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Apply greater focus on key brands other than Barbie - They are your future. Apply greater focus on innovation rather than rigidly sticking to price-points. Great products sell no matter what the retail.
