I worked at Mattel full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

half day Fridays (in theory), great coworkers, solid cafeteria and gym, relevant products, easy to rotate to other departments

    Cons

feel like a cog, very bureaucratic, no avenue to give safe feedback to management, bad IT. They romance you with a great corporate culture, but I found that there was no work life balance and a lot of office politics. Hours were long and "peak time" was practically all the time. It was impossible to make plans during the week. They made us work MLK weekend and 4th of July. I think other departments had it easier, but it's pretty difficult being in Finance. Morale was low in our department due to being overworked and with layoffs pending.

    Pros

They are truly leaders in the toy industry. You get to work with the brightest and the best. There's a variety of brands to work on, and there's great opportunities to make a positive impact on the business at all levels.

    Cons

It can be extremely political. You really have to campaign for promotions/rotations, as management is not focused on developing their team if it doesn't benefit them personally. People are rewarded even when they don't live by the values of the organization.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

I worked in the Hot Wheels division, so can't go wrong there.

    Cons

Cubicles can be a bit isolating, wish they would adopt newer workspace innovations.

    Pros

A leading edge creative company in product categories, subsidiaries and how the business is run. Fast moving, decisions in a timely fashion and usually promotions by merit. Excellent salary structure and bonus system and competitive compensation.

    Cons

You must recognize and accept a high degree of politics. If you can't handle confusion due to politics don't work here, on the other hand if you can cope its a great place to work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have tracked my former employer Mattel and have no advice for the toy business. Multi device electronics are starting to grab dollars all the way down to two years old. More attention to expanding into that market seems wise.

I worked at Mattel full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The company offers a lot of extra perks for their employees. There is a lot of work you have to do but there is always something positive going on. Company values, benefits, basketball leagues, dry cleaners, day-care, company parties and gatherings, opportunity.

    Cons

Like any company there are times when you have tons of work and protocol, and sometimes you don't. The security is intense and you aren't allowed to bring in personal computers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be sure to take on activities outside of your direct work. There is a lot of opportunity to grow as an employee.

    Pros

Although, this is a large Fortune 500 company, the feel is very caring and family like. Pay and benefits are good and the company matched 401k is generous. Much opportunity and growth exist in and environment that encourages creativity.

    Cons

Job security is often in question.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to retain the best and the brightest by supporting a work-life balance.

I worked at Mattel full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Half day Fridays. Decent cafeteria food. Discount on toys. Recognizable brand.

    Cons

The company does not care about its people. They will lay you off despite how long you have worked there. There have been people that were laid off after only being there for 2 to 6 months. That is definitely not enough time to have contributed to the company's poor performance. Think twice before thinking about quitting your job to come here.

The systems are also extremely outdated. Depending on how and when you pull data, it will be different from the next person who pulled it. This makes work 10x more difficult because you will not know who has the correct data. You will spend more time QAing the data than analyzing it.

Management is also afraid to take risks and think outside of the box. They would rather set goals low so that they can come out looking like heroes if they exceed them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take care of your people. They are doing the ones doing the most work.

Pockets of Humanity Within a Multinational Corporate Beast

I worked at Mattel full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Amazing benefits (e.g. picking my own boys up from school on half-day Fridays) and amazing colleagues (creativity, integrity, appreciation). Supportive of work life balance - in my early years w/Mattel, as a single mom w/2 very young children, this was CRITICAL.

    Cons

    1) Top down decision making with little or no input sought from task level employees whose effectiveness will be affected (recent example: IT outsourcing initiative), resulting in "cost saving" measures that wind up increasing costs on the back end (dramatic increase in lost labor costs due to unresolved IT issues, inability to effectively enforce Service Level Agreements).

    2) Despite avowed commitment to "developing people", I was completely pigeonholed. Over time, I came to see this as a problem endemic to the company, experienced by management as much as by as support staff like myself. People at every level struggled to earn recognition and rewards commensurate with their efforts, contributions, ability and talent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1) Eliminate the most egregious wastes of time (=money) by engaging task level employees to identify and solve challenges they face in their day to day jobs (e.g. multiple $50,000/year employees standing in line for one broken down $5,000 printer, or spending hours managing a new hire setup that could be streamlined to a 20 minute task).

    2) Rethink strategies for "developing people", because current system DOES NOT WORK. Default use of temporary employees to meet increasing production needs without increasing permanent headcount prevents promotion of existing employees, demotivating them as there is nothing to strive for; long term temporary employees also feel disenfranchised, with no sense of security or a future with the company. Constantly relying on temps to meet growth needs is like keeping on a tourniquet on a wound that requires major reconstructive surgery.

I have been working at Mattel full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, smart talented people, Friday half days, career development training, campus has lots of services like gym, dry cleaning and credit union.

    Cons

Very political work environment, HR lacks discretion, top heavy organization, multiple groups have limited growth opportunities, culture can be very cutthroat and clique-y

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on identifying larger talent pools and work harder on retention. Hire more visionaries and leaders vs management candidates
