    Pros

Great place to do research: lots of freedom; international and stimulating environment; amazing colleagues; people work a lot (which is very motivating); great facility; decent compensation compared to other public research institutions

    Cons

Compensation is still bad compared to industry positions; only temporary positions available (except directorship); some PhD-advisors appear not to do well at teaching their students and consistently have students who barely manage to obtain their degree; people tend to work a lot (which makes you neglect your work-life balance)

    Pros

Great scientific culture, fantastic resources... lots of opportunities to develop as a researcher and learn from the best. Very well-respected in the international scientific community. The research output is of the best quality.

    Cons

Very competitive research environment, pay for early career positions as in most places could be higher, long-term prospects are limited. People aren't always as friendly as they could be.

    Advice to Management

Set a trend and compensate early career researchers a bit better. Do more to build camaraderie across departments and research groups. Encourage the development of bit warmer relationship between scientific and non-scientific staff. Make people feel valued.

  6. It is a great place to work, but a lot depends on your direct line manager and the group you work in.

    Pros

it has a stellar reputation and fantastic resources and because of this it also attracts highly talented and motivated people.

    Cons

It's a scientific insittute modeled on feudal serfdom: the director is king and everyone else has to keep him happy. Sometimes that also means producing good science, but at a great cost (both figuratively and literally).

    Advice to Management

Have more accountability at the highest levels. Develop internal checks and balances to prevent directors from abusing their power. Offer career advancement opportunities within the Max Planck and provide better training for students and post-docs, rather than just using them as data slaves. Spend less on equipment and more on people and you will get better results.

    Pros

Resources seem unlimited compared to universities.

    Cons

All contracts are short term, only senior scientists (directors) are on permanent contracts

    Advice to Management

There is not much to complain about.

    Pros

    Advice to Management
