Pros
The Maxim Principles (now Core Values) are not just BS printed on a coffee mug or posted on people's cubicle walls, people at Maxim really live by such principles as not accepting the status quo, always standing up for what you believe to be right, and trying as hard as you can.
I trust in our company's leaders. I know they thoroughly consider all major decisions, they are very forward looking, and I believe they act in the best interest of Maxim's customers, employees, and stock holders.
Maxim demands commitment and hard work, and it makes it a better place to work because I take pride in working for a company that holds itself to a high standard. There is no frustration about people not carrying their weight.
People are promoted based on merit, and they are compensated based on merit.
Cons
There are exceptions to the great parts of Maxim. There are the occasional weak employees, there are the occasional poor managers, and there are the occasional bad decisions.
Advice to Senior Management
Continue to focus on employee job satisfaction. I have seen a huge improvement in this area over the last x years, and would love to see it continue. I’m talking in particular about the little things, like involving employees in planning of company events, to ensure the return on investment for large company events is worthwhile - because the employees are able to really enjoy the events. Maybe increase team building opportunities. This is encouraged in some groups, but not others. Make a budget for team building that is lost if not used. Every other quarter require involvement from employees from multiple departments in order to use the budget to help increase collaboration. Provide a free lunch once a week. Or offer free snacks in the break rooms on Fridays. Little things make a big difference.
Pros
Benefits are fairly decent
Vacation accural okay if you have worked here for 10+ years
Holiday party good if you have young children
Cons
Only work here if you want zero life. Pay is way too low for the time employees are expected to put in. Takes months to get additional support / increased manpower.
Pros
often very close teamwork cooperation
Cons
small voice in large company
Pros
Positive cultural shift under way (more collaborative, communicative); extremely smart and dedicated employees; great products; renewed focus on customers; new, modern HQ campus opens in 2012
Cons
Intense work ethic; product-centric focus; rather insular and myopic (old habits?); should be very proud of its achievements and no longer remain quiet
Advice to Senior Management
This is a remarkable, established company but not yet well known; continue to value new culture of collaboration and communication...and LEAD
Pros
Very flexible work hours.
Wide visibility to higher management
Good place for followers. Don't try to lead any new ideas or activities unless you are told to do so!
Cons
Mandated innovation drives that create a lot of work and buzz but no results.
Promotion via buddy system - often promoting people who are the least capable
No appreciation for those who push for a better company.
Little sense of reality - It's 2011 and not 1993!
Not a place for fresh ideas, unless they come from the top!
Advice to Senior Management
Get real. Some of the goals and metrics are ridiculous!
Go get a MBA or similar so you learn what management means! To us who have seen more mature companies from inside, Maxim does not shine as the most professional managed place.
Pros
I Learned a lot working here. My coworkers were awesome and very friendly. They were very smart, professional, and helpful too.
Cons
There were no getting to know your coworkers. Working was pretty lonely for the first few weeks. There were little, if any, people ages 18-25 working here.
Advice to Senior Management
Feedback is always appreciated. The lunch was very nice for getting to know a few coworkers off the bat. Hire more people in the 18-25 range.
Pros
Very diversified products across different industries. Highly independent business units provide further diversity over management or business cycles. Great performance metrics to measure every aspects of groups and individuals.
Cons
There are still quite many less competent persons in different positions of the company. Many high quality people left in past several years because of poor stock performance and return.
Advice to Senior Management
Need do better job to attract top notch talents. Make the compensation more competitive. A capable employee is worth several mediocre ones.
Tunc did a great job!
Pros
Good business model. Initially granted ability to change, create, improve. Decent benefits and bonus program. Talented group of co-workers that would work long hours for the joy of creating quality work.
Cons
Drastic change in work environment over last few years. Tyrannical upper management. Lack of trust in the organization. All emphasis on negatives. Loyal employees no longer fit new organizational model.
Advice to Senior Management
Pounding on a table during meetings is generally not a good motivational tool. Some positive reinforcement is a good thing. Take a good look at why morale is so bad at so many locations.
Pros
Its a hard-working company. It has American management team who is highly professional.
Cons
They don't invest enough in their employees.
Advice to Senior Management
They should respect innovation more and allow the growth of their personnel. They should invest more in the personal development of their employees.
Pros
Able to create & invent new solutions as long as the mangers from Planet Dilbert don't see it!
Stock options & cash bonuses are good.
Cons
Way too much petty politics & back stabbing.
Doesn't matter to the management even if you create a best in the industry solution!
Most of the management seems to be from Planet Dilbert!
Advice to Senior Management
Lead, follow or get out of the way!
