I worked at Maxim Integrated as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

I did a summer internship with this company. I had a very enjoyable and educational experience. My mentors were great and taught me a lot of both technical and non-technical things. Interns get access to most of the software and resources that the full-time engineers had so I was able to learn and contribute in a meaningful way. The company also offered intern events and activities, which were great for getting to know other interns and people in the company.

    Cons

Some of the full-time engineers (depending on the group) had very poor work-life balance. Some things could have been better organized.

    Pros

Lots of opportunities for personal growth and gaining new skill sets through putting on lots of different hats. Challenging work.

    Cons

People seemed overworked, there's too much to do for each person. For those who have been here many years, can be stuck in meetings for the entire day.

    Mid-Sized Company that acts like a Start-Up

I worked at Maxim Integrated full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good Stock payouts / Options, decent cafe, everything is in one building, work-out space on-site. Friendly, smart co-workers

    Cons

volatile, job-insecure, management doesn't comprehend your capabilities. layoffs are common, "leave-the-fun-at-home attitude". Each department has it's own budget, but often forgets important updates to IT

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get out of the consumer market, you did great with the commercial / military market. Bring more employee central activities in-house. Encourage alternative fuel-vehicles. Offer free Light Rail access and free on-site cafe. Make Maxim a destination, not a transit lounge.

Great Technology but Sales Management is very difficult on outside and inside sales teams

I worked at Maxim Integrated full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Leading supplier in the analog semiconductor space.

    Cons

Sales Management focuses too much on salesforce.com metrics rather than truly creating a strong partnership with customers on all levels. Compensation plan is also very difficult to understand and very subjective which leads to many top performers being in the dark as to where they stand until they are delivered their bonus at the end of the year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create a better "Team" environment throughout all levels of sales management (Inside & Outside sales) and establish a true compensation plan that rewards the top performers and does not put them on the same playing field as under performers.

I worked at Maxim Integrated full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Many smart people. On-site cafe. Modern laptops for designers. With the push to be "Integrated", Maxim is trying to improve IP reuse. Management largely consists of once-engineers promoted, so many if not most managers have a technical background and understand electrical engineering.

    Cons

Groups communicate poorly so connecting with those smart people is challenging. On-site cafe is as expensive as going out. Just a few years ago Maxim IT was far behind the times, and a lot of the infrastructure bears the brunt of that legacy; for example, it is cumbersome or impossible to access data from other groups (other design groups, other functional groups like test, ESD, etc). With the legacy of being an analog company, analog and digital "Integrated" is a vision slowly becoming reality but not quite yet a reality. With many managers coming out of engineering, many have poor management skills and an out-dated view of needs of individual contributors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve vertical communication. Many of the problems could be addressed if better understood. Require each VP to dine in the cafe monthly and to broadly announce the day, so anyone can sit with them and eat.

I worked at Maxim Integrated full-time

    Pros

    The paycheck, 401K, medical benefits

    Cons

Can't work from home, not good about taking your earned vacation off, micromanagement, not empowered to make decisions, inconsistent communication, way too much nepotism, undervalued, top heavy management, only 7 paid holidays per year, and we used to have only 4 until recently. Once they increased the holidays they cut back our vacation pay. It really was not an increase of anything. Most companies get 10-11 paid holidays Do not recommend working here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ask the employee what work style works for them, do not expect them to have the same work style as management. If they are getting the work done and meeting deadlines then let them continue with their style. Find better qualified managers.
