    I worked at Maxim Integrated

    Pros

Engineering is very solid and the company has the potential to be great again.

    Cons

The current CEO and CFO don't think twice about terminating people that are still strong contributors. All they care about is market perception. There was a time when this was not the case. The problem with their approach is that they have destroyed moral. No person feels safe at Maxim so people operate under constant fear and are terrified of making a mistake. This makes for a very unhealthy work environment. It is very sad as the original CEO would never have let this happen. Outsourcing and purchasing external innovation is the new model.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Replace the current CEO and stop throwing away American jobs. Be bold and take risk's without outsourcing.

I worked at Maxim Integrated as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

Good people who enjoy their work. The company was trying (perhaps still is) to move away from its image as misery when it comes to spending money, as seen by the construction of the new buildings at different locations.

1st and 2nd second level managers try hard to take care of their people.

Upper management appears to communicate often to the employees.

    Cons

When working on projects that cross group boundaries and problems occur, especially schedule slippage, inter-group politics goes adversarial causing wasted time in "covering your butt" activities.

Some groups do not offer real career advancement except for job grade increases doing more of the same work.

Working with older technology since that works to build products their customers need. Does not prepare you for work at other companies where they expect applicants to have experience at the latest technology nodes.

The company has a tendency to interview people with the intent of building a list of potential candidates for a later time, and often does not have a hiring requisition open when bringing a candidate in house for an interview.

Over the last few months, Maxim has moved work out of the US to its overseas operations and to off shore contract houses.

I have been working at Maxim Integrated full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Organizational culture and values in place aim to personal and company growth. Maintains and manufactures old simplified technologies with established demand. Drives innovation through improving on existing working model technologies which makes for job security.

    Cons

Some management groups lack knowledge and experience to effectively lead projects. Incredible mismanagement of company financial resources in what seems to be learn on the job tactics rather than following simple industry standards. Experience, knowledge, overall contribution for the better good of the company and safety of its employees are perceived as a threat by management if not derived from own thoughts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Accept advice from the pool of knowledge available within company. Empower, and reward employees through recognition of their accomplishments. Do not repackage employee's valuable advise and take credit for it as your own to your superiors.

    Pros

Very nice, new campus. Good IT support. Decent benefits.

    Cons

Some technical staff in the labs are hostile. Every month either a manager or director changes. Constant restructuring. Brutal, very unstable company in terms of laying masses off unlike in old days.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Instead of laying off junior and mid-level technical staff, try to utilize them in other BUs since they are cheaper and easier to train.

Paychecks didn't bounce at the bank.

    Cons

Career ambitions are denied by management. The happy things stated as company policy are not delivered to employees by management

Current Employee - Fab Operator in Beaverton, OR

I have been working at Maxim Integrated full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The manufacturing operators work a very demanding fab, it's not boring
Good place to learn the industry
    Good health care benefits

    Cons

Pay is very low. The only people who make a wage that is somewhat reasonable are people who have been there 10+years. Raises are small and with little difference between average and high achievers. Reviews are a joke, more designed to weed out the low end than to motivate the high achievers. With a needs improvement score you get a write up. With a exceptionable score you get the attitude of it's expected. Morale is terrible. Smart people keep silent rather than offer constructive criticism because they know it's the best coarse to follow. Speak up and it will be remembered-forever. Upper management is old school and very out of touch with the operator levels. Minimal availability of advancement

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to appreciate people who deserve it and mentor (not threaten) people who need improvement. Show recognition to people who work hard with the same effort as poor performers are documented

    Pros

Used to be a very aggressive cutting edge company but took good care of its people. The company culture has changed. Employees are disposable.

    Cons

Seems more focused on downsizing. Morale is low. Management is top heavy. The is not much future in the company. It has lost its edge.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take better care of your people.
