I have been working at Maxim Integrated full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The physical plant is very nice. The cafeteria and gym at HQ are both great. It is possible to have work life balance

    Cons

Company has shown no growth in past 5 years. Hard to believe reorgs will fix this. Company has made multiple acquisitions that didn't work out. Repeated layoffs have impacted morale. Many groups work in silos and don't communicate. Upper management may be great engineers, but they have minimal leadership abilities.

    Advice to Management

Focus on revenue growth, not on short term quarterly profits. Hold senior execs accountable for results.

I have been working at Maxim Integrated full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

People are friendly and generally very open and sharing. Heard from a former director that the salary at that level is high enough to make it difficult to find a job at most other companies at that level. Not sure if this is true, maybe see what directors have posted on Glassdoor... :) Health insurance options are pretty good, and not too expensive. 401k options are also pretty good, and not too expensive.

    Cons

Recent restructuring has really hurt morale. There seems to be a trend of downsizing (fabs, remote locations). If this continues it could be bad, as concentrating everyone in San Jose, the most expensive city in the US to live in (yes, even more than NYC, or SF,according to recent statistics) doesn't work well if most of the employees are paid below market rate (check Glassdoor, you'll see what I mean).

    Advice to Management

I think the CEO had it right when he noted that people are motivated by different things. Sometimes he needs to rein in the business types who think winning the business is everything to everyone. I understand the restructuring is to improve profitability, but profit shouldn't be the only reason we come to work, or don't, as the case may be. If it is, then we're definitely in the wrong business, in general it seems like semiconductors is stagnating and consolidating. Maybe a bold move to, as one Maxim, move towards reaching a higher purpose than just making money would be the difference over our competition.

I worked at Maxim Integrated full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of innovation going on at Maxim. If engaged with the right business units and the customers are large enough to receive support there are exciting opportunities to be had

    Cons

Difficult to receive support on smaller opportunities. Business Units often occasionally promoting products that are just conceptual and have little chance of being developed into a product

    Advice to Management

Find ways to provide the field team with necessary tools and resources to perform jobs effectively. Limit the amount of customer exposure to vaporware.

I worked at Maxim Integrated full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good benefits. Lots creative and intelligent designers. Most people are friendly and nice working environment.

    Cons

It used to be a great place to work for. Lost focus in past several years. Also, lost employees' loyalty due to uncertainty caused from every 6-month layoff activity.

  10. Old School Chip Company Dragging it's Feet Towards Modernization

    Pros

Great learning platform for starting your career. High level of responsibility and autonomy. Employees have the opportunity to take on value-add projects to gain management exposure. Not expected to work more than 48 hrs/week.

    Cons

Pay is in-line at best. Company is quite rigid and having a hard time modernizing itself in terms of structure, procedure, and most importantly culture, along with retaining younger talent. A lot of old-school semiconductor minds bent on cutting costs and boosting margins at the expense of improving IT, Marketing, Supply Chain Management, Customer Support, Sales and other functions that will ultimately help the company grow it's market share and revenue and run more effectively. IT, Supply Chain, and Customer Service are grossly under-resourced. Very much a engineering-first company that makes best in class products but doesn't always deliver them to it's customers on time because of the formerly listed reasons. Promotions are not as merit-based as they should be - a lot of other factors such as age/seniority get in the way.

    Advice to Management

Move away from risk-averse entrenchment and truly start acting boldly as company motto states.
