I have been working at Maxim Integrated full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Interesting work...a place where you can make a difference. Pay is good especially for top performers. Benefits are very good. A very nice modern campus in San Jose and many upgrades to remote facilities. I have worked here 5 years and continue to see positive changes.

    Cons

Balanced business model insufficient to offset Samsung revenue declines in smart phones. More intensity to grow outside of mobility.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to invest in larger acquisitions.

Great Technology but Sales Management is very difficult on outside and inside sales teams

    Pros

Leading supplier in the analog semiconductor space.

    Cons

Sales Management focuses too much on salesforce.com metrics rather than truly creating a strong partnership with customers on all levels. Compensation plan is also very difficult to understand and very subjective which leads to many top performers being in the dark as to where they stand until they are delivered their bonus at the end of the year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create a better "Team" environment throughout all levels of sales management (Inside & Outside sales) and establish a true compensation plan that rewards the top performers and does not put them on the same playing field as under performers.

Slowly improving, but it takes time to turn a behemoth

    Pros

Many smart people. On-site cafe. Modern laptops for designers. With the push to be "Integrated", Maxim is trying to improve IP reuse. Management largely consists of once-engineers promoted, so many if not most managers have a technical background and understand electrical engineering.

    Cons

Groups communicate poorly so connecting with those smart people is challenging. On-site cafe is as expensive as going out. Just a few years ago Maxim IT was far behind the times, and a lot of the infrastructure bears the brunt of that legacy; for example, it is cumbersome or impossible to access data from other groups (other design groups, other functional groups like test, ESD, etc). With the legacy of being an analog company, analog and digital "Integrated" is a vision slowly becoming reality but not quite yet a reality. With many managers coming out of engineering, many have poor management skills and an out-dated view of needs of individual contributors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve vertical communication. Many of the problems could be addressed if better understood. Require each VP to dine in the cafe monthly and to broadly announce the day, so anyone can sit with them and eat.

I worked at Maxim Integrated full-time

    Pros

    The paycheck, 401K, medical benefits

    Cons

Can't work from home, not good about taking your earned vacation off, micromanagement, not empowered to make decisions, inconsistent communication, way too much nepotism, undervalued, top heavy management, only 7 paid holidays per year, and we used to have only 4 until recently. Once they increased the holidays they cut back our vacation pay. It really was not an increase of anything. Most companies get 10-11 paid holidays Do not recommend working here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ask the employee what work style works for them, do not expect them to have the same work style as management. If they are getting the work done and meeting deadlines then let them continue with their style. Find better qualified managers.

I have been working at Maxim Integrated full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

There is very little to recommend this company. I guess the only pros I can think of are the sheer number and diversity of Maxim's end markets. This has a stabilizing effect on the company's earnings.

    Cons

Since the founder, Jack Gifford was forced to leave, Maxim has been on a steady decline. While I was there, I saw sagging morale, incompetent and disingenuous management and a revolving door labor force.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Treat employees like real people.

    Pros

Great customer base, great legacy, Excellent benefits and pay. Great facilities, Blue Chip customer base. Great vacation policy, some smart people

    Cons

The company claims to be innovative but they still manage the development like they did in 1989. Management (TD, MM in particular) seem to think they can innovate using a Finance spreadsheet and project plan. Hey guys, you cant! It takes a clever person or team with the intestinal fortitude to move forward when the difficult problems emerge! Followers quit when they get to the hard part. Innovators have the courage and vision to plow through the most difficult problems. Ten companies will easily develop the easy, predictable products and then they will beat each other up on margins. Successful innovators love the hard problems because they know the other nine competitors will give up before solving the problem. TD and MM need to step away from their spreadsheets and project plans and listen to their customers and their most courageous and passionate innovators! The company stock price and revenue has remained relatively flat since the recovery. Their legacy business is shrinking and they have laid off their most creative staff for not innovating fast enough!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Tunc, Matt, Look in the mirror guys, after this many years with you two at the lead, there is not other group, customer or product line to blame! Place your bets on the bold, passionate and clever. You can't analyze your way into innovation. You will not maintain your gross margin targets without innovative products. Stop buying dead companies for $$$ (e.g. Volterra).
