I have been working at Maxxam Analytics full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Staff has a great overall personality. We get pretty cheap coats at winter time to make up for the lack of Christmas party for remote sites. Staff is able to transfer to different locations, but they are all the same.

    Cons

Maxxam severely under pays their employees. They hire on New Canadians, or people getting their citizenship before permanent Canadians to be able to under pay them so much. Definitely the lowest paid contractors on site of any oil sands project. It is actually an on going joke with other contractors. Management does not get into the lab to help if needed. Good company to start out with and get your experience (if they decided to cross train you) but not a company to stay with over all

    I worked at Maxxam Analytics

    Pros

Depending on which lab you're in, you can work as part of a team or you can work more independently. The lab could be fast-paced or more relaxed, again depending on the lab.

    Cons

You will be performing the same procedures every day. For people who enjoy learning, there's not much of that as a lab assistant. You may also be required to work overtime.

    Pros

There are so many wonderful people working at Maxxam.
The business model seems to be based on getting the maximum out of their employees. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but you will be expected to produce immediately.
You will learn how to deal with difficult people and situations.

    Cons

Your enjoyment of the job will vary depending on your manager. Some managers are wonderful and some not so much. There is a lack of respect for employees, which I have learned first hand and through conversations with other employees. The pay is at the lower end of the spectrum. This is a production lab and therefore high volume.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management should examine their middle management for turnover rates, closely review exit interviews.and look for ways to compensate employees to increase their job satisfaction. People quit managers not companies.

    Cons

Overworked, bad hours, at hiring interview what was told was untrue, lab staff badly treated, bad communication.

  10. Good, but a contract lab.

    I worked at Maxxam Analytics

    Pros

As contract labs go, this is a very good one. QA standards are very strict, so if you get unexpected results, that is the client's problem not yours. None of this nonsense of just giving the client the result they want whether it's accurate or not, which is prevalent in so many contract labs.

    Cons

The pay is not great, the pace is uneven but often hectic. But again this is a contract lab so that is the nature of the industry. I would advise a young person to start here, put in a few years, and move on to something better, unless you get promoted and enjoy the hectic pace. Then by all means stay and make a career of it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Share more specific info with employees about state of the company at meetings. Also, Edmonton Environmental DESPARATELY NEEDS A NEW BUILDING. This is more critical than you think.
