I have been working at Maxxam Analytics full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Maxxam offers a lot to it's employees, more and more as it grows at a rapid pace. Great benefit packages, employee events (breakfats, BBQ's, free ice cream), nice facilities, free coffee rewards program, employee assistance program. There are a lot of jobs opening as we expand and Maxxam likes to promote from within. Definitely gives you an opportunity to try different positions. In my experience here I have been given the freedom to try many different things which has been an amazing learning experience.

    Cons

While Maxxam's salary structure reflects competitve wages within the analytical testing industry, they are fairly low, resulting in turnover. The cons would really depend on your specific role.

    Advice to Management

As you grow continue to offer employees advancement and benefit opportunities to keep them growing with you.

I have been working at Maxxam Analytics full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    * A very well-structured company with very strict and well-defined QA requirements. * Opportunity to learn multi-tasking and prioritization. * Friendly co-workers * Industry leader and very profitable

    Cons

    * Quick turnaround time and fast-paced * Most of the staff need to work on one weekend day * Work may be highly repetitive depending on position

    Advice to Management

Nothing. I really like my bosses.

I have been working at Maxxam Analytics as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

If you are looking for a company with lots of diverse opportunity for career growth, then this is the right company for you.

    Cons

It appears to me that promotion from within is based on if you have a close friendship with your supervisor.

    Advice to Management

If you are a hard worker but not socially close with your supervisor, you may be over looked for promotion, which should not be the case. Promotion should be based on the quality of work delivered.

I worked at Maxxam Analytics full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Friendly environment and very supportive staff. Superiors are not shy in training subordinate if great interest is visible.

    Cons

Poor hours. Long hours: no work-life balance

    Advice to Management

Management have to let system break sometimes to remedy the real problem, instead of patch things up on the spot. e.g., adding significant hours of over time. There should be a better coordination between sales group and laboratory group.

I worked at Maxxam Analytics as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great management staff, fantastic workplace policies, and the corporate culture is one that respects employees first. The management staff would routinely come around making sure that each employees needs were being met, and if not they would work towards rectifying whatever was wrong.

    Cons

Shift work among temporary workers, and in the busy season long hours. There is a continual deadline for processed work, but that is the nature of a laboratory that operates based on client contracts.

    Advice to Management

Perhaps a third mid day to early evening shift during the busy season would alleviate some of the strain on some workers.

  10. Good, but a contract lab.

    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

As contract labs go, this is a very good one. QA standards are very strict, so if you get unexpected results, that is the client's problem not yours. None of this nonsense of just giving the client the result they want whether it's accurate or not, which is prevalent in so many contract labs.

    Cons

The pay is not great, the pace is uneven but often hectic. But again this is a contract lab so that is the nature of the industry. I would advise a young person to start here, put in a few years, and move on to something better, unless you get promoted and enjoy the hectic pace. Then by all means stay and make a career of it.

    Advice to Management

Share more specific info with employees about state of the company at meetings. Also, Edmonton Environmental DESPARATELY NEEDS A NEW BUILDING. This is more critical than you think.

  11. Lab assistant co-op

    Positive Outlook

    Pros

Depending on which lab you're in, you can work as part of a team or you can work more independently. The lab could be fast-paced or more relaxed, again depending on the lab.

    Cons

You will be performing the same procedures every day. For people who enjoy learning, there's not much of that as a lab assistant. You may also be required to work overtime.
