I have been working at Mazda North American Operations full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great company with lots of potential. Take control of your future because no one at Mazda no anywhere else will. Learn the business and either get happy being bored or use it as a spring board for your future.

    Cons

Everyone is out for themselves and with the exception of a rare few none of the management has an interest in development of their team members.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Very nice, collaborative group.

I worked at Mazda North American Operations as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Very nice and fun people, flexible schedule, fun projects. People were very passionate about work and collaboration was key. We did have some BBQ's in the back lot to celebrate 'occasions'.

    Cons

I value my time at the company but it was too short to have any bad things to say about the company.

I have been working at Mazda North American Operations full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Benefits/work life family balance/nice bonuses/excellent car program

    Cons

There's a couple more people that should have been encouraged to take the package offered 2 years ago. A couple people are allowed to sour work relationships because they've been there awhile and kiss up to the higher ups.

Also our advertising spend has jumped big time. We need relevant commercials though. Not Mia Ham, Bruce Lee, and Duran Duran. We could learn from Toyota, Buick, and Kia.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give decent merits to folks that get it done! Additionally, look outside the box more often.

I have been working at Mazda North American Operations full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great people and co workers. Real sense of direction of wanting to go forward and grow their market share from it's current 1.9 -2.0% position. Outstanding work/family life balance. Quality of products are the best in the industry. Mazda really wants to take care of their customers and is dedicated to providing excellent service for those in need. Good support from Senior VP, a real "car guy." Small company feel, but still a major player.

    Cons

Major disconnect in three areas. Corporate to the Regions-Regions to the Departments in that Region-Department Heads to the boots on the ground soldiers. No continuity within Regional Depts. Too much room for independent thought from individual Zone /Region Managers. Mazda will not rid themselves of absolutely abysmal Managers. In certain circumstances they don't want the industry's best. Managers are allowed to run amuck with absolutely no help from HR. Forget real advancement in the Company unless you are one of the "golden children" that has FORD pedigree. FORD nepotism is still very alive and well at Mazda. Someone at the top needs to really address this situation to give dedicated and faithful employees a chance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Two issues that need to be addressed. 1) Take proactive steps to improve your Dealer Body. Way too many Dealer partners that NEED TO GO IMMEDIATELY!! Come up with a plan to stroke a check and get rid of these poor performers. Mazda will never, ever grow from where it is now to where you want to go with the current Dealer body. 2) All C/D level Managers need to be evaluated by their direct employees on a yearly basis. You are harboring some pretty horrific & ineffective managers that are allowed ruin this company from a subordinate's view. Take the Leadership 360 survey results and have someone who isn't a "friend of a friend (FORD)" review them. Mazda will be a mediocre at best company to work for from an employee viewpoint unless some changes are made.

Great culture, do not take themselves to seriously, great managers who see the big picture and want to help grow their employees into future leaders

    Cons

    Pros

Employees can make a difference if they get involved. Good place for self motivated people. If you need detail management then go elsewhere. Decisions are not caught up in red tape. Things move quickly. IT group really gets things done.

    Cons

Employee development is lacking. HR needs to work on helping employees. Staff reductions are not helping morale - workloads are not reduced at the same rate. Several key business executive positions are now filled by Japanese staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Eliminate areas not key to operations to reduce work.

Cliquish environment. Managers emphasize team competition over cooperation. But cool benefits though.

    Pros

Car allowance is great. B level employees get $550/month to use for lease of up to three vehicles. 'C' level employees get $650/month. Any money left over from the allowance is added to your paycheck.
    Great medical and dental benefits.
Fitness benefit of $300 per year can be used to buy bicycles or for gym memberships.
    Very good looking cars.

    Cons

Easy to plateau in your position and reach a career dead end.
Absolutely NO diversity among senior management and executive team.
    Horrible food in the cafeteria.
Very cliquish environment. If you're not in the "right" clique your career advancement opportunities are slim.
The company refuses to support progressive fuel economy standards and deliver more fuel efficient vehicles.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't pit employees against each other. Use employees respective talents to build well rounded teams. Forcing team members to compete creates unnecessary tension.
