I worked at McAfee as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

McAfee has the best technology out there in the security industry, there are a lot of talented individuals scattered throughout the organization. Marketing this technology in new and unique ways was an excellent way to begin my career.

    Cons

As a contractor at McAfee I felt expendable, useless, despite the fact that I was running a team and providing value that stretched all the way across and up the marketing organization and beyond. McAfee does not invest in its lower-level talent and much of the time upper management becomes complacent with the status quo, not willing to financially support new endeavors and hoping for the best from tired old ways. It's a conservative culture, and advancement (especially in the marketing organization) is difficult, if not impossible.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest more in your lower-level employees - talent won't stick around incontrovertibly (especially in the valley). Try new things and don't be afraid of failure. Open up opportunities for your lower-level talent that you need to stick around to continue to compete.

    Pros

None to think of. Although they say its a great place to work. The reality is if you dont fit into the mold then you are ostracized.

    Cons

Male management team are very arrogant and elitist. Most of the sales staff are scared of speaking up in fear of losing their job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Real tranperancy would be good. It's in the action not in the words.

I worked at McAfee as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Experienced co-workers helps with a lot of learning and self-development including a lot of development opportunities like education. There were some perks of free food although could have been more frequent. The company encourages full-timers getting their time-off (PTO) to avoid burnout.

    Cons

The social demographic is thin. A lot of older employees who have been in the industry for a long time and seem to have lost their drive/interest. The social connection to co-workers is a bit thinner as a result and can be highly team-specific dependent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    More recruitment of college grads.

    Pros

Very good benefit program, will be moving to Intel entirely in a few months with the integration. They give stock to all employees which is a benefit. Great cause in making the world a safer place. Good flexibility, but a lot of work to do.

    Cons

Ton of work, always running leaner than we should be. Always facing budget cuts and RIFs happen far too often. Distrust of management ranks in certain functions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pick a direction and stick to it. Mike Decesare had us headed in the right direction as evidence by getting back to growth, but with new leader on board he feels a need to course correct. Cut back on the RIFs, it is horrible for employee morale.

    I worked at McAfee

    Pros

    Comparable compensation.
    Positive work/life balance.
    Friendly atmosphere and people.

    Cons

Utter lack of ownership allowed to development. Everyone is treated as interchangeable parts.
Easy to be pigeon-holed for life. Very little done to promote career growth or highlight opportunities within organization.
Lack of consistent vision means products fail due to mismanagement of resources and changing product course. That's OK... we'll just acquire a new company that has what we want...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop following the trends. Set your own.
Stop acquiring companies to try to catch up. Acquisition history should have shown this is not a long-term successful strategy.
Stop annual layoffs. If you need to shift where the money goes, shift your people. Instead of just saying "people are our most important asset", show it.

Current Employee - Internal Sales Representative in Cork (Ireland)

I have been working at McAfee full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Decent company to start your IT career if you are a graduate but don't stay too long.

    Cons

The fluctuation of staff is extremelly high, sometimes people are dissapearing from the floor after just 1-2 months in the company. Everyone just stops making the effort to learn the names of their new collegues or say hello to each other. Professionalism and politeness are optional in McAfee Cork. There is low investment in people, poor salary, no career progession plan, salaries are not reviewed every year. People working for 3 years whith the exact amount offered to them in the fist work day. There are no team events.

Because the recruitment process takes longer than the usual norm, there's a big period between a person leaving and finding a replacement. For the new comer the start is sharp to say the least, with no help from the manager or team members. I would suggest you ask at interview for how long your position has been with no incumbent to give you an idea of the backlog. Expect to be given a sales quote in day one, with no pipe line created. Expect afterwards to be requested to make up for the sales missing during the year while your job position was empty.

You are hoping to join a cool IT company and what you find coming to Cork it's this outdated call center with 1990 management style and TV screens mounted on the wall monitoring your calls. Absolutely all jobs in Cork are telesales whether called ISR, iCAM, LDR, you will have a telesales job and be treated like a telesales. Because of the unfriendly and unsupportive environment that is evident througout McAfee in Cork, the change of location and culture makes is relatively stressful.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Some so called loyal employees who have been working in Cork for 2-3 years are there because they've developed the art of not working at work, amounting cigarette breaks longer than their working hours.

Maybe you should review everyones jobs and distribute workload equally, it's not fair to increase sales quota for new employees constantly, but accept with no problem the underporming explanations, blaming the market and economic crise, from older employees who have just learnt to sweet talk to the management.

Top management should check why lots of middle managers reward through preference and not merit. Maybe then people will not be running out of McAfee with the high speed they do now.
