I have been working at McCarter full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Good medical benefits and very flexible with hours

    Cons

Horrible PTO; strict with leaving early. If you have a doctor's appointment and need to take an hour and a half, you will have to take a 1/2 day. Very stagnant - staff does not want to grow in Boston office. Too many people sitting around not working while others are extremely busy. Not the place to come if you want to advance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

HR should walk around to see what's really going on instead of hiding in their office

    I worked at McCarter full-time

    Pros

Flexible schedule, prestigious firm, and generally good group of co-workers. Lots of cigarette breaks available and time off for personal reasons.

    Cons

Small raises, pay structure inconsistent, and bad behavior rewarded, particularly from support staff. The firm is also very stingy with supplies, and has outdated equipment (both hardware and software).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward employees who add value to the company and let go of dead weight.

    Pros

The adminstrative staff are extremely professional.

    Cons

The attorneys do not treat non-attorneys with respect. C-level management are not competent in basic business operations and are actually afraid of the attorneys.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Non-attorney management needs to stand up for staff and create a culture of trust and respect. Improve top-down communication.

    I worked at McCarter

    Pros

There are a lot of good people to work with here. They are willing to help you out when you're just getting started.

    Cons

The hours are demanding, just like any big firm. It was hard to get meaningful experience in the few years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I've worked at a lot of firms before, and so far this was the best. Everyone is treated with respect.

I have been working at McCarter

    Pros

Sophisticated work; associates generally get along well; opportunity to do challenging work; at least at the regional offices, salaries are comporable, if not better than at other similar firms.

    Cons

Upper management of the firm does not communicate well with associates. After so many years here, it is still a mystery here what the requirements are to become a partner. Decisions are made based on cost alone, not on any other factors. associates not consulted.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the associates; involve them more in the decisions, after all the associates are the backbone of the firm.
