I have been working at McClatchy Company (More than 5 years)

    Pros

McClatchy Interactive is full of smart, innovative professionals who are excellent at team building. The culture allows for positive work life balance, and the atmosphere is fast paced yet comfortable.

    Cons

Company wide communication is lacking. Compensation is not competitive with IT shops in the area. Benefits, including 401k match have declined in recent years.

I worked at McClatchy Company full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

For the most part, the people care about doing good journalism. Most are willing and eager to learn new technologies to do their jobs better.

    Cons

Cutbacks in recent years have really hurt the mission. A lot of good reporters, editors and others have lost their jobs. The newspapers -- and their readers -- have suffered. Also, like many media companies, the older management types don't listen to the younger generation nearly enough.

    Advice to Management

Listen to and trust the younger, digital generation. Don't just say you'll do it -- actually do it. They're smart, talented and have lots of great ideas. There are still way too many old-school white guys in their 50s and 60s making all the decisions. Younger voices in management positions would be refreshing.

I worked at McClatchy Company as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

This is a first-rate organization. People take their roles incredibly seriously, but it's also a very team-oriented community.

    Cons

Because of the global decline in newspaper subscription, McClatchy has been forced to substantially cut down its workforce. The employees that do remain are stretched pretty thin as it's all hands on deck.

    Advice to Management

Management is doing the best they can to prepare the company to face the new reality of the newspaper industry, but a continued focus on the customer or newsreader is the only real way to ensure longterm success.
