I worked at McDermott as an intern

    Pros

Had a mentor that guided me through assignments and what she wanted me to do. She answered any questions that I had and made the process easier.

    Cons

Was significantly younger than most of the employees in the accounting department. Nobody really reached out and gave me advice. A lot of the work I was given was busy work.

    Advice to Management

Have a program for interns to where they can better learn how to work at a big company. Assign tasks that will help in the future rather than work that is insignificant.

    Pros

Great knowledgeable coworkers that work as team and help each others when needed, the salary is pretty good too.

    Cons

Last year a lot of people with extensive years of experience for laid off, a lot of uncertainties especially since the stock went down pretty low. Immediate manager tries to micro manage which already drove a couple of good people out. The benefits could be a little better.

    Advice to Management

Don't try to micro manage people and try to hold on to the remaining experienced people you have.

I have been working at McDermott full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

McDermott breeds loyalty and there are some wonderful people that work here. Pay is at or above market and they provide opportunities to work abroad.

    Cons

It's a project-oriented company, so when projects are up, things are great. When projects slow down, well, things are not so great.

I worked at McDermott full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

My manager was awesome. Enjoyed working for him. Work was challenging

    Cons

Brought in new C-level management and changed things. Last I heard, they took away the yearly bonuses and no merit raises for the 1st time were given out.

    Advice to Management

Be more open and communicate with your teams

  9. In the world of engineering, seemed like a pretty fair employer. Have to weather the ups and downs of business cycles.

I worked at McDermott full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The people I worked with were all good, the working hours decent, and expectations reasonable while allowing for new challenges. Pay was fair.

    Cons

Location only convenient at HQ if you live in west part of Houston. Traffic all around the area petty heavy.

    Advice to Management

Be more open to offering new opportunities to current employees before laying off.
