I worked at McDonald Auto Group full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The best thing is the value they place on employees. The good employees are valued and they do their best to hang onto them, you can really feel that in the annual company meetings. The owners seem to work hard to ensure it's a good place to work by minimizing benefit costs to employees, keeping the growth on an upward trend, trying to stay ahead of the curve, etc. The pay was definitely above average from what I expect a comparable position at another dealer would pay, which is always nice. Decent work/life balance (as long as you're not in car sales). Middle management seems to have a very realistic view on business and the world, and doesn't expect miracles when they know full well that it won't happen, and recognize that the employees are only human. Willing to train and nurture people who come to them with little/no experience, and recognize skills they can contribute, and try to promote/place that person accordingly. Fantastic growth over the last few years, and the trend is still rising. Great coworkers who all have good attitudes in general. Overall a pretty comfortable place to work, and not what I expected out of a car dealer.

    Cons

Hey, it's still a car dealership. It's still a competitive sales environment (in those positions), and you can expect to be booted for someone else with the promise of doing one better. While middle management is pretty grounded in reality, the upper management is still very numbers-focused (high standards, I suppose), and will apply that pressure down the chain of command. Pay plans can change with no notice. Also, I never once received a formal performance review, which is a very important thing to let you know where you stand against their standards and your coworkers, especially in a sales environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Formal performance reviews (annually? quarterly?) so employees know what they need to work on in order to thrive. Come back down to earth when it comes to unrealistic expectations in a tough economy and tough market. Consider a little more flexible scheduling for when employees need to work weekends.

    Pros

    They encourage at first.

    Cons

Management will treat you like garbage if they want to get rid of you. They hesitate to fire someone to get out of paying unemployment.
Do try to promote within the company. They will make sure it doesn't happen.
Insurance is super expensive for mediocre coverage.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Advice to the owners- get rid of your management team. Eventually you will have a law suit on your hands for harrassment. They don't know how to lead and develope their staff. The use intimidation which is the wrong way.

Upper management can not be trusted

    Pros

Pay is decent . hours expected is way above what is discussed at interviews .

    Cons

Upper management does not stand with mid level management . hours expected are way above hours discussed. Job descriptions are not correct . would not recommend to any type of friend .

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn more of what you expect from employees . how can you control a business that you have no idea of what is expected from employees. Hire real technicians after all you are trying to run a dealership . not a shade tree shop .

    Pros

Schedule flexibility, close to home, at times fun to drive nice vehicles on long drives. Ability to use company supplies and equipment to clean own vehicle. Access to discounted service, parts and car sales.

    Cons

low pay, unreasonable work demands, no promotional abilities, inept supervisor who expects salaried output on peasant pay. No formal or informal performance review. Excessive employee theft and shrinkage.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote and reward those who work hard every day. Any employee will quickly lose motivation when no incentives exist.

I worked at McDonald Auto Group

    Pros

McDonald Automotive Group is a great company to work for because of the fact that they hire quality employees who are enjoyable to work with. Additionally, the company makes noble efforts towards insuring the happiness of their employees. The medical benefits are amazing and compensation is great as compared to other companies within the same industry.

    Cons

The biggest downfall of this company is that management sometimes fails to recognize the overwhelming amount of workload placed on an individual. The large workload had led to a great deal of frustration from many employees and also seemed to decrease overall productivity. In addition, employee turnover rates had been high in certain departments. The high turnover rates also created frustration for existing employees because of the amount of hours lost due to having to train new employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take the time to analyze group moral and realize that employee happiness is directly correlated to productivity. When I had worked for this company, there had been many employees who had expressed concerns that were never taken seriously enough. This had caused some of the employees to feel under appreciated. Lastly, I value the diversity and safety trainings that the company had mandated.
