Current Employee – been working at McGladrey LLP as an intern for less than a year
Pros – Decent hours
Everyone is down to earth and the partners are great
Very helpful managers
Worklife balance exists
Chicago location is nice
Growing client base
Cons – Pay could be better
Client base is limited to middle market companies. Don't expect to be working with fortune 500 companies.
If you're looking for overtime as an intern, you won't get as much as you'd think
Advice to Senior Management – PAY US MORE!!!! (lol, don't we all want that!)
Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend

Former Employee – worked at McGladrey LLP full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – Working for McGladrey, you can expect to get exposure to the audit process from start to finish. Although clients are private and smaller than the big 4, there are many complexities. Exposure to these issues can definitely help one's career
Cons – Management is completely out of touch with those working for them. Partners stay behind there desks and despite the "we care about our people rhetoric" the culture is terrible. McGladrey prides themselves on integrity and values, however they promoted a partner who cost the firm approx $1mm as a result of a deficient audit, to lead the practice. Turnover is very high, but management will tell you all day that it is just part of the business. Forget getting a strait answer from management here. If you do work here your best bet is to avoid the office at all cost, learn as much as you can, and leave.
Advice to Senior Management – Stop concerning yourself with economic growth and start fixing the internal problems. People are unhappy and it is being ignored. Leadership needs to stop promoting management from within, and start looking outside, as they are only perpetuating there already lack luster culture.

Former Employee – worked at McGladrey LLP as an intern for less than a year
Pros – Its a big firm with lots of opportunities, mostly states side. The pay is on par with their competitors. I met some good people, that I would work for again.
Cons – The Manufacturing/Wholesale and Distribution group wasn't my cup of tea. Roughly a week of training beside just doing returns and making corrections. At the time the firm was in some financial trouble, nothing major just worrisome. Long hours, which is common in public accounting
Advice to Senior Management – There needs to be more of a mentoring program to keep young talent motivated. I don't hold the CEO fully responsible he was trying to implement changes to the organization.

Current Employee – been working at McGladrey LLP full-time for more than a year
Pros – Strong firm culture with supportive people. Competitive pay. Flexibility to experience broad range of engagements (type of project and industry) and a diverse portfolio of clients.
Cons – Very steep learning curve. If you do not take initiative to take on projects and ask questions it can be easy to get left behind.
Advice to Senior Management – Start new hire consulting associates at least a month before busy season so they can better prepare for what lies ahead.

Former Employee – worked at McGladrey LLP
Pros – Competitive pay and benefits; career advancement if you are lucky enough to work in a growing sector. Good holiday and end of season party. Partners/managing directors have an open door policy and in general can be easily approached. Pretty fair evaluation system.
Cons – There are too many office politics and games - just doing a great job will not get you anywhere. The company is confused about what culture it wants to have. The pay is decent, but too many hours are expected for the pay. Other than the CPA, the company does not encourage employees to seek out other designations. The company has a small town feel which appeals to some, but it needs to do a better job of hiring and promoting minorities (i.e. African American, Latinos, Asian, Jews). The company uses a variety of sneaky tactics to monitor employee's activity and ultimately get rid of employees they no longer want to keep. Unfortunately, it is not a comfortable environment to work in.
Advice to Senior Management – Clarity and straight talking with employees is what is needed. Pay attention to the nature of employees' complaints and concerns.

Current Employee – been working at McGladrey LLP
Pros – Good pay, great opportunities to learn. Lots of specialty groups with a lot of knowledge. If you come here out of college, there is good opportunity for advancement.
Cons – Mickey G's promotes "work life balance" to attract talent - this is hogwash. Sure there is work life balance, but the scale is always balanced towards work. People leave, never get replaced and the workload just increases for those who stay. The culture here has really hit the crapper.
Advice to Senior Management – Don't pump up work life balance when you don't mean it.

Current Employee – been working at McGladrey LLP
Pros – Good benefits and a challenging environment for consulting. The option to work at home when not on an engagement is a plus.
Cons – No work life balance what so ever. Constant change in structure and senior management. Poor communication of expectations. Poor annual raises and bonuses which is blamed on economy even though business had been well.
Advice to Senior Management – Management should compensate and promote women fairly. Men make more money in the same positions than women who work just as hard if not harder.

Former Employee – worked at McGladrey LLP
Pros – The company offers good training, plenty of CPE, experience, ability to specialize in a single field, and the ability to choose audit or taxation.
Cons – 70-80 hrs busy season, 60-65 off-season. Evaluating system = partners rate every member of the department from low to high, all levels. Top ones raise, bottom ones out.
Advice to Senior Management – Company needs to reward the sectors that require more work and reward them financially. I never heard the phrase "6 days, 60 hours" until my exit interview. It was 7 days, 4 months straight. I would have love to have stayed, but it wore me down.
