I have been working at McGladrey LLP full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

A solid Middle Market professional services firm in NYC. Professional, collaborative, friendly. NYC location is perfect - easy walk form GC. Money is ok, a little below FMV Vs other professional service firms. Comp plan changes a lot.

    Cons

Partner driven culture - BD's cannot be partners and in some instances you're reminded of this daily. Firm is made up of mostly acquisitions and operate individually so it's luck of the draw how strategic your office might be. Once a client is sold, you're not allowed (usually) to "farm" the account.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Embrace a pro-sales culture. Have a sales person be VP of sales (not a CPA). Create a career track for BD's to become principals.

    Pros

Beautiful office, flexible hours, awesome benefits, cafeteria in the building and free coffee

    Cons

    No coordination between consulting groups,

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find better ways to spread out the work you have. Directors - make sure your managers can assign work, relieving your employees of the pressure to be billable.

I have been working at McGladrey LLP full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

McGladrey has a large amount of exposure to middle market companies, and the assignments that I work on are varied, and we do get to experience a large amount of breadth in the different assignments. Most of the people you will work with and for are easy going and down to earth.

    Cons

Top Heavy - still an accounting and tax firm at heart, it is changing, but it is taking quite a while for it to happen. It is very regionally based, and there is hesitance to share resources across regions. Work life balance is limited, and pressure for billing hours is extremely high. Bonus structure is not great, and in certain areas, they are hiring senior staff versus promoting from within.

    I worked at McGladrey LLP

    Pros

Full ownership of work, decent work life balance

    Cons

Was not trained at ALL, was treated with racial prejudice and had a 2.5 hour commute each way! All this was on top of a bait and switch in the offer letter. Also did not get fully reimbursed for my expenses (and reimbursement process is typically longer than CC billing cycle, you will incur the float)

    Pros

Have been learning each and every day. It was slow at first but picks up soon after.

    Cons

Pay could be alittle better, but this is the industry average. Salary varies by which office you go to, because they adjust for COLh

I worked at McGladrey LLP full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

    - being able to work with smaller clients
    - using tax software to prepare returns

    Cons

    - office culture in the NY office is beyond terrible
    - demand you commute to the office on the weekends even if there isn't any work to be assigned
    - no AC during the summer months when told to work on said weekends, stuck using a desk fan
    - Management has little to no personality
    - Management gives you the impression they will work with you and train you but once you are hired and started could care less about you
    - health benefits are the worst i've seen in the industry

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The current staff in the NY tax dept now are the main reason why there has been so much attrition. In the few months of my employment I saw multiple managers, supervisors and staff leave because of the culture alone. Does not promote a friendly environment to work in and just makes people want to leave.
