Pros
Opportunity to be part of a growing company, especially in Consulting. I have been fortunate to have great personal and professional experiences within my group and even with my client(s). I am never scared to approach my boss for anything.
Cons
McGladrey's name is not yet as well recognized as that of the big four accounting firms.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep the benefits coming - small expenses (relative, when compared to salary increases) like giving everyone iPads are very meaningful to employees (it's the little things!).
Pros
They have hired a lot of good people and are moving in the right direction with standard processes and technology.
Cons
The pay isn't competitive and the HR is bush league. Also, ditch the whole mid-west small company feel and start landing larger clients for targeted consulting work.
Advice to Senior Management
Look at what they pay at the big 4 and then pay accordingly. If you want to keep losing top performers, continue giving 3% raises and 5% bonuses.
Pros
Most upper level (senior and up) have great knowledge of manufacturing warehousing and distribution knowledge.
Cons
Absolutely no praise or raise for exceptional work. They do not care about employees at all, a very good employee got very ill and was asked why they couldn't come back to work sooner like a famous tv personality did! Many managers and partners tell staffers they are stupid and scream at them because they can't self teach complex tasks (like business combinations) to themselves. Another employee was in the hospital after major surgery and partners were emailing the person asking them to get into files and complete work (even though the abscence was approved way in advance). When HR was contacted they did nothing emails continued! HR is only interested in the partners and do whatever they say, they are not interested in the fair treatment of employees. Unless you like abuse this is not the place to be.
Advice to Senior Management
Wake up and start respecting your employees and pay them what they are worth or there won't be anyone left at the company. Why would anyone stay here working 80 hour weeks if they can get paid 30-40 % more at a big 4 and get better name recognition and job opportunities if they leave?
Pros
This is a nation firm so there is some name recognition. It is a job so you do get paid.
Cons
They do not seem to follow the stated track for promotions. If you are a brown-noser, you can climb the ladder here. If you just dig in and do good work, do not expect to be rewarded for it. There has been a lot of turnover recently and to combat it, they bring in people from outside firms/industry who are behind the legacy McGladrey employees however get paid more.
Advice to Senior Management
Treat the hard-working employees fairly. Especially those who start out with you and stay with you. Give some training to managers and above on how to communicate better as well.
Pros
Work and life balance are great. Upper managment is easy to approach. Promotions are fast if great potential is shown.
Cons
The pay compared to other firm is lower.
Advice to Senior Management
Try to maintian the great employees and listen to there concerns. Try to be more competitive with the pay against the competitive firms.
Pros
I worked with a good team and the benefits were decent. Work - Life balance was, at least in Consulting, doable.
Cons
There were a lot of internal politics and posturing. No clear or qualified leadership. No recognition for doing what really mattered - only that which drove artificial goals.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to employees more, engage them, and realize that they are your biggest asset. Then figure who the best leaders are and let them lead.
Pros
The best reason to work at McGladrey is it is a national firm and you can get your experience to get your CPA license
Cons
Plenty of downsides. The leadership at this firm does not know what it is doing. We are continually receiving emails telling us how great changes will be (such as the Partners reacquiring RSM McGladrey) however it looks like all it is helping is the Partners and Directors. There has been a ton of turnover in the past few months and it has left the rest of us with more on our plate than we can handle.
Advice to Senior Management
The Partners and Directors need to attend some leadership training as they are very poor in communicating and relating to us staff.
Pros
There seems to be more of an overall work life balance at McGladrey compared to firms of a similar size.
Cons
Benefits have declined in recent years and compensation is not always competitive. The firm doesn't always treat top employees well enough to retain them.
Advice to Senior Management
Be more generous with compensation at lower levels in order to retain top talent. Keep communicating with employees regularly regarding significant changes.
Pros
The pay at McGladrey is similar to other firms in the area based on other offers I received and classmates I have talked to who work at other firms in the area. McGladrey also gave out a signing bonus.
Cons
The people, plain and simple. Management really does not treat staff as professionals. Instead, we are treated as second-class citizens. We are switched from job to job without talking to us to see if we have prior commitments. Travel does not matter as we are scheduled overnight without much warning. There is also a lot of turnover.
Advice to Senior Management
Start communicating with the staff or there will not be any staff left as we are all leaving. McGladrey claims to have a work-life balance. I have not seen it so management should start letting this happen or stop claiming to have a work-life balance program.
Pros
Met some great friends, learned about audit, not a bad place to start. I left after two years when I realized I would be happier in a big 4 environment (so far so good btw)
Cons
compensation is a joke compared to competing firms (midtier and big 4).
hours aren't any better than competing firms.
Staffing of jobs seems to be completely random, no logic whatsoever.
Firings/layoffs happen more often than they should, and to people who aren't deserving.
Advice to Senior Management
Good luck, I feel like this firm has been going downhill for awhile.
