    Pros

Some great people who have a wealth of knowledge.
Good work/life balance and very fair compensation.
Culture embraces the ability to work from home and have remote resources

    Cons

Stagnant, with very little driver for innovation or process improvement.
Little accountability for middle management, which leads to challenges in getting help or support when you need it.

    Pros

People I work with really know their job. Receiving good guidance on my duties. Everybody is willing to share different ways to make jobs run smoother. HR both recruiting and inside the building is great.
I wasn't rushed though the first week, they had new hire classes that were informative and had topics of a wide range.

    Cons

Everything seems fine, I have only been working here for three weeks.

    Advice to Management

Management seems fine, now seems like a time for growth and I feel McGraw-Hill is trying to grow even more which is good from my perspective.

    Pros

The people here are wonderful and extremely down to earth. Beautiful office, fully stocked fridges. Pool table and round robin games of ping pong every afternoon.

    Cons

Too much flip flopping. "Design by committee" is mind-numbing and discourages product ownership.
In regards to out of town management, they schedule too many meetings. 'seagull' style management... (they fly in, squawk for a while, and fly back out).

    Pros

Good talent at different levels of the organization, lots of opportunity in the education space. Current CEO has instilled confidence in the overall direction of the company.

    Cons

Extremely hierarchical, strategic actions frequently conflict with stated strategies. (read: hidden agendas). Company having a difficult time transitioning in a meaningful way from dependence on declining print sales to a fully digital company. Typical over emphasis on leveraging newly purchased companies into inappropriate solutions.

    Advice to Management

The second tier of leadership is where the greatest risk lies. Without a solid team at that level, the strategy will never cohere into the success that is needed. Dig deeper into the long-range plans, in particular on the technology front. There are nasty surprises lurking in the direction being taken.

    Pros

There are absolutely no pros to working a McGraw-Hill Education.

    Cons

Every day is a fire fight to fix either production issues or work a lot of overtime trying to insert new functionality with very unrealistic schedules. A terrible environment!
They've lost $100M in contracts with clients this year to incompetence at all levels. The software does not use any frame works (everything is home grown) which is a career dead end.
Also, even though there is Java in the mix, all the business logic is in PL/SQL.

    Pros

Talented production staff, content experts, and art department

    Cons

Too focused on outdated marketing strategies and pay almost no attention to the changes in teaching, learning, and content

    Advice to Management

Put more people with an academic background in education and content knowledge in decision making roles and subordinate marketing to digital content development

    Pros

The only good thing is the great pay.

    Cons

not a good environment to work for. Not a good work/life balance since we had to go home and work besides the 45 hours at the office.

    Pros

The people I worked with is probably the best thing I can think of to say about this company. They were all committed book publishing professionals who worked hard but also knew how to have some fun in the workplace. I enjoyed the company of my colleagues tremendously. Also good benefits.

    Cons

Lack of training for new job responsibilities; leadership paying lip service to advancement where there was none, especially in the production department. A lot of crisis management. Sometimes no support from immediate supervisors. Lots of offshoring, including IT support--no onsite IT help.

    Advice to Management

More transparency and less dependence on information about procedures, etc., trickling down through the pipeline.
Open up the mentoring program to lower-level (grade) employees. Consistency across departments and divisions with respect to telecommuting and less reliance on the fallback position of managerial discretion.
