Pros
Good pay
6 weeks of PTO
401k Match
Good choice of health benefits
Good ability to move within the company
It's not a sweatshop
I have worked for this company for 13 years. It was my first job coming out of college. I was thrilled to be hired. Thirteen years later, I still think that it's a great place to work. The environment is friendly and it's not a sweatshop. As with most jobs, your mileage may vary depending upon your manager. Also, the layoffs are humane. They bring in people to help with finding you a new job and let you sit at your desk for a month finding a new job.
Cons
Job turmoil
Job education not as good as it used to be
Some parts of company are not making money
If you like your job, the worst thing that you can think of is to be laid off. McKesson Information Solutions in Alpharetta is constantly moving and shifting because some parts of the company do well while others do not. Many projects get "sunsetted" because they are not competitive. It's upsetting to have to change jobs every 3-5 years. The one part of the company that is making money hand over foot is Managed Services, so if you can find a job in that organization, do it. Also, the education part of McKesson used to offer in-classroom training. These days, those training rooms are ghost towns. I learned a lot during the in-classroom training and it helped my career 100%.
Advice to Senior Management
Re-hydrate the in-classroom training, especially the technical training.
Pros
Good people, good training, and overall positive experience
Cons
Poor Mngt infrastructure, to much constant change in upper levels of decision making.
Advice to Senior Management
Detail clear and specific goals for sales organization.
Pros
Very dedicated people. Good compensation.
Cons
The company burns through it's human capital rapidly. If you are in the protected management circle you survive. If not, regardless of the contribution you have made, you can be terminated at any time. McK's lack of respect for their very experienced resources is unfortunate however it is a bonus for their competitors!
Advice to Senior Management
Come out of your offices and listen to your people. Unfortunately this will never happen. Too bad really......
Pros
Good team working enviroment where most employees work hard for the company and their customers. Most managers especially at mid-manager level respect their employees and treat them fairly. In addition I believe that in general the compensation is above average as well as the benefits provided.
Cons
Very focused on quarterly performance which tends to keep company from having a long term view of customer relationships. In addition since company growth has been almost exclusively thru acquisitions, there are significant problems with product integration and internal product development which has resulted in recent loss of many customers.
Pros
Salary ok... a little below market in the dept I was in
nice work environment
benefits okay. Could be better
No bonuses in my department
Cons
Management did not listen to employees just to customers.
A lot of micromanaging done
a lot of favoritism there as to whether you would succeed or not.
Did not really listen to employees in my department
Advice to Senior Management
Management needs to listen to employees more and bonuses need to be rewarded.
Pros
Large company with many career path options
Great on working remotely
Many good people to work with who are smart and know healthcare
Cons
Commission payouts. If its not a 'clean' deal i.e. revenue cannot be recognized right away, your payout of commissions could take between 1 and 3 years. Seriously. Even if the company gets their money within a year.
Inefficient processes that lead to busy work... tracking the same thing in multiple places or formats for varying purposes.
If you do not know the internal McKesson structure (who to contact), a career here can be very difficult.
Advice to Senior Management
Provide better communication and more learning opportunities on the market to the sales force.
Remove the good ol' boy network
Fix how commissions are paid and the process for review.
Pros
I found the people at McKesson to be smart and easy to work with. In general folks are very eager to help fellow employees and customers.
Cons
McKesson needs to consolidate layoff actions and limit them to no more than once per year. Due to the way they are dribbled out now, employees stay in constant fear of losing their jobs.
Advice to Senior Management
Gradually "train" customers that they will be better off with fewer, if any, customizations to the products they purchase. Implementation, upgrades and fixes will go much smoother.
Pros
Smart people, great solutions, innovative, great benefits, growing industry, healthcare focus, company size and stature, facilities, Paid time off, community involvement
Cons
management, lack of respect and integrity, will work you hard at the expense of your vacation time, lack of strategic direction, low morale
Advice to Senior Management
Actually practice the ICARE principles; treat your people well, weed out management that is destroying morale and corporate success
Pros
They have a lot of resources and excellent benefits. You can get excellent exposure to any application used in Health-care and hospitals. Good work-life balance.
Cons
A lot of attrition, it is a revolving door with a lot of politics going on.
Advice to Senior Management
You are their to manage the people that report to you first and not to manage your career.
Pros
Employees are very professional for the most part and the social environment is nice. People at this company make it what it is. If you brown nose the right senior manage, you will probably do well at this company. This company is also top heavy with women in management positions therefore I have seen women advance nicely and exceed males that are comparable or more experience. It is study work and there is always plenty of it... PTO is just the right amount, and you will need it at this place. If you are part of the college hire program, take it, its awesome and you will learn a ton about life at big company.
Cons
I don't know where to start...A huge cold Company, Internal disconnects, crappy outdated SW tools to do your job, Pressure, Overworked, Under Pay, Commissions are iffy, health insurance is high and there are core principles called ICARE that the company seems to violate when it comes to its own employees. The Customer is First, McKesson Second, Your Business Unit third and guess who is dead last? You....and you know it too. I have worked in high presure environments before including Engineering in manufaturing where a minute of down time can cost the company a $1M and this place doesn't come close to the presure which is placed on you by the fact that the internal business units don't really speak well to one another but yet "tag you are it". The training sucks badly and basically you are on your own from day one and you feel like it. "Sink or Swim" Two weeks after I started I felt like throwing in towel but I am no quiter. Anyone that tells you this is not true is simply lying to you. I have read a few positive postings about McKesson but mostly BS. I have experienced countless sleepless nights for years! I have trried to move up but its nearly impossible and I have actually documented my manager derailing my efforts to move on within the company...Oh yeah and your manager has to approve in wrtting that its ok for you to talk to another manager regarding a position even if its exploratory.. its like shooting your own foot. What are the chances you can do this in Q3 or Q4?...just about zero! Can't go to HR about anything because your manager seems to mysteriously find out, I have documented that too. So HR is basically useless. We just went through a major lay-off and although I am still there, there are signs that another wave may be coming just in-time for Summer... so warning.
Advice to Senior Management
Your peolple make your company act like it.
