Current Employee – been working at McKesson Medical-Surgical
Pros – good benefits, salary and working conditions. Tough to get hired and difficult to get fired. Strong training and generous bonus program for management. Like most places, working here can be great if you get a good boss and miserable if you get the wrong one.
Cons – After great training and spending huge sums of money, they seemed to be at a loss as to how to utilize their new resource. Human resources leaves a lot to be desired. I'm still not sure what they do since everything is done online. Decisions are sometimes made about your career without your input.
Advice to Senior Management – Stop worrying about the stock price and get back to building the business.

Pros – Benefits are great and colleagues are decent people. McKesson is an industry leader in their field and has been recognized for this achievement.
Cons – Incompetent leadership, lack of respect from management to employees. Pay is not competitve and has been an issue for years.
Advice to Senior Management – Watch who you let get into positions of authority. I am seeing a situation where two people have gotten a taste of authority and now it has caused some issues. Leave the arrogance and pride behind and exercise some humility by listening to the people that do the jobs day in and day out. Morale in our dept is low, but people are afraid to look elsewhere because of the economy. It is interesting that we have also seen an exodus of tenured sales people recently and no one seems too concerned. Do not drive the good people away with poor leadership!

Pros – Great benefits package.. superior. They do a great job here.
Location
Cons – Flawed promotion philosophy
Pay is not very good, not competitve, despite what they say.
They do not listen to employees. We take surveys each year, but nothing really changes.
Advice to Senior Management – Look at who you have in charge and maybe change some things. Too many people that have been here several years and they are stuck in a rut. Make the pay superior like the benefits. Listen to the employees

Current Employee – been working at McKesson Medical-Surgical
Pros – Benefits are good.
My personal life is not infringed upon by my job.
Management is mostly fair and supportive
Cons – Very little opportunity for career growth.
MMS is outside of the systems for the rest of the McKesson Corp and our employees have a togh time breaking through into other divisions of the company. (McKesson Drug, Zee Medical, OTN/McKesson Specialty, Moore Medical, etc.)
Advice to Senior Management – Standardize more across our various divisions so that employees can more easily cross train to another division. I know we have systems that we have invested in in our various parts, but the more heavily invested in systems for the larger divisions might work even better for us. And our employees would gain experience in the same systems as our other divisions. We might even be able to share information across divisions that would benefit our company and our custoers.

Former Employee – worked at McKesson Medical-Surgical
Pros – You are an entry-level designer wanting a small place to learn.
Cons – Senior management has little experience outside this agency so knowledge is very limited. Clients tend to be short lived. Company professes to be "strategic" but they do not offer any real qualified strategy for clients other than typical creative brainstorming.
Advice to Senior Management – None.

Current Employee – been working at McKesson Medical-Surgical
Pros – Health is an industry that may not be struck as much by the foul economy. Many of the lower job are needed for the company to function. So, in short you have job security on your side.
Cons – It is a flat organization. Most people that are moved into higher positions have been with the company for several, more than 5, years...it does not matter how good your work is...it matters how politically good you are...almost like they promote false perspectives. This is one reason why their expenses management is questionable...everyone is biting their tongue.
Advice to Senior Management – You're losing way too much money, more than you know, in the basics. Unfortunately, no one that understands the basics is empowered enough to talk about it.

Former Employee – worked at McKesson Medical-Surgical
Pros – I work from home and enjoy not having to commute, dress or put on make-up in order to keep up appearences. I also live in a state that does not have a high rate of pay for my type of position but McKesson pays as well as working in a hospital would pay. My supervisor is very supportative and it is nice to feel a connection even though we telecomute and work over the telephone. The work challenges my intellect rather than my physical abilities. It is in some ways a more difficult job but keeps your mind working and sharp.
Cons – Lack or personal contact with my peers. It is sometimes lonely to work in an enviroment that is isolated from your peers and supervisors. Having an instant messaging system to "talk" with others helps some but not having someone present in the room can be disconcerting at times. I do enjoy having the room to myself at home with no distractions but it can be boring when the job demands are not as intense as other times. Also not personally knowing your peers makes it hard to relate to people at times. When there is a crisis on the telephone, having someone there to help you through it would be nice.
Advice to Senior Management – Ease up on some expectations. At times it is difficult to get a process completed in the time given due to patient demands on time.

Current Employee – been working at McKesson Medical-Surgical
Pros – Great place to get your feet wet. You have a lot of autonomy as a sales person and can manage your territory how you want. Sales reps are not at each others throats like other companies. McKesson is well respected against competition.
Cons – The admin work is increasing exponentially. No support for sales force. Corp office people are incompetent. The worst benefits I have ever encountered. It's better to not have health insurance! Work-life balance is non-existant. McKesson won't even pay for office supplies, cell phone, gas, car or other expenses for sales force. Even though tenured Account Managers make well over 6-figures, its hard to make a decent living on what they pay now. You make very little compared to the gross profit you bring in. CEO makes over $140 million (doesn't own stock in his own company) and they act like they can't spare a penny to accomodate customers and employees.
Advice to Senior Management – See employees as assets and show them recognition in ways other than just emails. Invest in better benefits to retain talent. There is no engagement with sales force; be creative and show them how much they matter.
