I have been working at McKesson Medical-Surgical full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Lots of employee programs and services as expected for a Fortune 10 corporation.
Customers are appreciative of McKesson's service & delivery model.
Regional Managers are good people to work for.

    Cons

Company is currently going through another sales force restructure. Typical large Corporation where you really are a number-seriously. New account manager compensation plan is awful and cuts potential earnings in half. Senior management deperately needs to eliminate positions after purchasing PSS. Currently there are too many reps in a single area to cover. Lots of legal documents to review and sign every quarter.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

After purchasing PSS, the company culture has changed for the worse. Suggest senior management stop eliminating good sales people and look at the value they bring to the company and work on territory protection. When you elminate an account manager, his/her customers move to our competition.

    Pros

A big name on your resume. May pick up a few skills along the way.

    Cons

Highly political and hidden agendas abound. High turnover. All the right outward signs of employee support, but the reality isn't there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you keep finding yourself in the same starting place, there's a lesson to be learned.

I worked at McKesson Medical-Surgical full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

They are a huge company so the medical benefits aren't bad. I really respected my co-workers and McKesson has a lot of great people.

    Cons

The left hand often times doesn't know what the right hand is doing. Marketing and sales aren't on the same page. Their pay is below market standards. They have very poor communication and have had two workforce reductions in the past two years despite over doubling the contribution margin in each year. From a technology standpoint, I was surprised how behind they were for a company so large.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When the CEO is making $180 Million and your are letting people go, the message of how big and great McKesson is as a newly fortune 7 company sounds pretty hollow. Your communication is extremely poor. Identify what you want to do, how you want to do it and then focus on that for a designated time. Your reps work too hard for too little money. The constant fire drills are tough on their morale. In addition, they spend the vast majority of their time managing processes and customer needs/complaints versus selling. You need to understand that managing several million in business isn't worth much if you lose it. The vast majority of a reps time is spent trying to keep business and yet their compensation is heavily weighted towards getting new business. If they miss bonus, the salaries are extremely low.

    Pros

My immediate boss was supportive. I meet some great people.

    Cons

The employees do not feel appreciated and there isn't enough done to make them feel valued. They are given tremendous amounts of work and then told that budget won't allow more bodies to help.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You frequently ask for employee surveys but changes are not implemented so they feel like what's the point.

I have been working at McKesson Medical-Surgical full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

PSS was recently acquired by McKesson. This has led to some great strategic positioning of the company making it by far the leader in this market. The absolute best part of the acquisition is the fact that the company has taken an objective approach to each company's processes and moved forward with the best one. Benefits are great including stock purchasing plan, 401k match, health, dental, and life. Work can be very fulfilling as you can see direct results of your labor. There isn't a day that goes by in this fast paced, always evolving company that has good leadership and tends to see trends prior to the competition. It always feels good to be on the winning team, and there is no indication that this segment of the company will be losing anytime soon.

    Cons

With some key components to the merger coming down the line work life balance has been atrocious. There's no plan that management has put into place to make anyone believe that this type of environment will ever get better. Resources are needed in key areas that are not being funded and the whole division is wondering if this is how life is going to be from here on out. The company is hitting goals, growing tremendously, and bigger than it has ever been. However, a new commission plan has been rolled out to the sales team at a volatile time and has the sales team questioning the motives of upper management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide employees with some assurance that work life balance is important to management. Culture could use a revitalization as it has been lost since the merger.
