    Pros

The people are amazing. It's a privilege to work with smart, talented people every day. Project experience and trainings build skills and content knowledge very quickly.

    Cons

Lifestyle. It depends on the project and can range from intense but sustainable to brutally unhealthy. I left because I had a kid and could not live with Monday through Thursday travel as a dad.

    Pros

Pay and benefits are great, very smart, nice people, fun to work with, everyone works hard

    Cons

I am a manager in a support role and this is a very ambiguous culture for us. It's impossible to get anything done without lots of partner support, and yet everything takes a long time and a lot of effort because if the partners can't agree they let things ride because the culture is so consensus oriented.

    Advice to Management

Don't hold your managers responsible for things not getting done when you are unwilling to lead or make hard decisions

    Pros

McKinsey provides accelerated career growth, and is an amazing place to build a network. McKinsey pays well, and your travel budget/stipend is generous. So you stay in good hotels and eat well on the road--which is nice, since you're always on the road!

    Cons

You're going to work hard, and you're going to travel a lot. Some folks get lucky and have some in-town clients, but expect to be on the road M-R every week of your first three years.

    Advice to Management

    N/A

    Cons

    tough, tough, tough did I say t o u g h? 65 hours are common and expected

    Pros

As a general rule you will: 1) work on Interesting projects; 2) work with really bright, motivated people; and 3) receive amazing benefits (e.g. medical/dental, life insurance, retirement) while you are with McKinsey. You do have an incredible opportunity to move ahead compared to peers in traditional companies. As a result, if you leave after a few years, you can come in at a higher level than if you had been at a company for the same amount of time.

    Cons

Three downside; 1) no matter what people tell you, there are going to be long hours and you will need to work hard to protect your weekends; 2) you can be on the wrong study at the wrong time and end up having a poor review that can do you in on bonus/pay raise percentage; and 3) travel... it is usually Monday through Thursday nearly every week of the year.

    Advice to Management

Continue to work hard to push the work/life balance and find ways to give consultants more opportunities to do less traveling.

    Cons

Hours can be nothing less than brutal

    Advice to Management

Let up on the travel and do more to make a work life balance possible. When I was there there was no such thing..

    Pros

Fantastic set of people, the most challenging problems, and an ability to define your own career path. Good benefits as well.

    Cons

Very tough to maintain a reasonable work / life balance while working at McKinsey. It is a very demanding environment.

    Advice to Management

Be more thoughtful about (a) promoting sustainable lifestyles (b) reducing the amount of waste in work that is completed by the teams.
