    Pros

Fast pace learning. Opportunity to work at difficult business problems. Career progressions. Fantastically stimulating people to work with.

    Cons

Perspective can be too self-centered. Easy to become self-infatuated with oneself. Risk of narrowing life- and job-perspective. Risk of burning out before you are 40.

I have been working at McKinsey & Company full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

You meet exceptional people, who love to provide feedback and help you grow.
You always have the chance to work on the world's biggest challenges for both firms and the community.... and even if you don't work on them at the moment you can stay informed e.g. by reaching out to your colleagues that do.

    Cons

Being a consultant is in deed very demanding. Without a strong support from you family this is not a job you will do for long.

Current Employee - Associate Principal in Munich (Germany)

I have been working at McKinsey & Company full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

a - Exceptional opportunities to work on various high impact projects and to get to know executive managers
b - Still recognized as the best address for making a career
    c - Teaches best-in-class problem-solving and structuring

    Cons

a - Less industry expertise and functional in-depth knowledge than expected, quality of client work claimed as "best solution" very often lacks practical experience, pragmatism and client insights (often not sufficiently respected by leadership)
b - In particular directors have a tendency to build their own isolated world of thinking, even requesting the team to not work and listen to clients instead of enforcing stronger integration and consideration of client concerns
c - Missing role-models along senior leaders (directors and partners), strong selforiented "diva" mentality. Social behavior towards teams (putting younger colleagues under pressure, threatening, yelling etc.) is very often unacceptable, and beyond professional values
d - Inacceptable work-life balance due to insufficient staffing/focus of project resources on follow-on projects and proposals, overpromising on scope or overstretched leadership (very often all of the 3 causes in one project)
e - Intransparent promotion processes - the recipee for success is to please senior leadership as much as possible. Independent and creative thinking is rather disliked and has an negative impact on performance

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Behave less arrogant (in particular towards clients) and greedy, become more humble and modest about yourself. Care more about individual people and clients, and start sticking stronger (again) to whats being said during recruiting events

Former Employee - Junior Consultant  in  Frankfurt am Main (Germany)
Former Employee - Junior Consultant in Frankfurt am Main (Germany)

I worked at McKinsey & Company as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

    1. Good salary; 2. Interesting assignments; 3. A lot of travelling; 4. Good medical insurance; 5. A really high-profile job, with McKinsey experience you can get a job almost everywhere

    Cons

    1. Excausting schedule: your normal working day can last from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m.; and normal working week is usually around 70-80 hours; 2. Although salary is good, it doesn't cover overtime; and if a salary is divided by hours that you've actually worked, it's not that much higher than average salary at other international companies where you don't get so much overtime; 3. Although at the begginning travelling for business trips could be interesting, after some time it becomes really tiring, especially taking into account that you have to travell every week, and spend away from home 4-5 days a week plus you get to sleep only 3-4 hours a day; 4. Very strict business dress style; 5. Not as much training as it is promised at hiring; 6. Very harsh competition: although i like fair competition, because it is motivation to improve your own professional level, very often at McKinsey it becomes unfair with intrigues and frauds

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve work-life balance, because currently you have to sacrifice not only your private life, but in generally LIFE and your health (because you have neither time to work-out, or spend time outside or simply sleep) if you want to work for this company

I have been working at McKinsey & Company full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

+ Offers access to a broad variety of industries and functions
+ Good brand on your CV
+ Maintains a strong alumni network
+ Stretches all employees to the highest performance possible

    Cons

    - (Senior) leadership at same peer levels rather compete against each other than working as teams to benefit from individual experience making working life to younger consultants quite difficult
    - Unstable base knowledge and experience due to significantly high share of flucutation on all levels
    - Intransparent people processes - very often seems people are only promoted if they do what they are being told without compromises or pushback
    - In comparison to markt outstanding performance is not sufficiently rewarded - Very good and good performance is not at all financially rewarded nor actively acknowledged
    - Partners and directors have a strong desire to mention and show their status symbols and financial wealth (team dinners very often focus on what kind of new Porsche or Ferrari has been purchased, where the most expensive vacation was spent etc.)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stronger worry about and focus on delivering the best solution and impact to clients than on your personal advantage, and internal processes
