I have been working at McKinsey & Company full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    Good salary and benefits
Highly intelligent and capable co-workers, although many are insecure overachievers
Interesting and challenging work for consultants

    Cons

    Horrible work-life balance
    Non-consultants are second class citizens
1,000+ partners who each expect to be treated as king/CEO
A business management consulting company that is woefully ignorant of its own management problems

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

McK is straying further and further from its core values and the late Marvin Bower would be appalled at the current state of things. There is no more "One McKinsey"; it's more like "A Tale of Two Cities" between consultants and non-consultants and the firm's annual Values Day based upon Marvin's core values is sheer hypocrisy at this point. Too many seven-figure senior partners nevertheless still consumed by greed and Rajat Gupta is only a symptom of a more widespread problem at the top of the firm. Non-partner senior managers under enormous stress and workload to attempt to placate the endless demands of partners who all want immediate attention and special treatment and the rules to apply to everyone but them. Even junior level staff are expected to work long hours and be available 24/7 despite having no bonus opportunity ("prod pay"). In general, non-consultants are viewed as nothing but a cost center to be eradicated wherever possible with remaining members expected to put forth Herculean efforts for the sole privilege of working at McK. .

I have been working at McKinsey & Company for more than 3 years

    Pros

Provides some of the most fascinating work you can get. I've had access to CEOs, head financial leads, and even advised a president in an emerging market. Colleagues are nearly all brilliant, though some may lack interpersonal skills (or a life outside the firm).

    Cons

Work life balance is the most difficult part of working at McKinsey. I've seen colleagues become incredibly unhealthy (stop working out, put on weight), turn to alcholism, and one even had a psychological breakdown and had to go on leave. It is a very high pressure environment, and can be difficult to maintain in the long term, which contributes to the high turnover. Also, compensation is rather weak, given the hours we work.

I worked at McKinsey & Company full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Very smart people to bounce thought off and get new angles that you haven't thought of. Not very hierarchical but "bosses" still run the show like Senior Partners in a law firm.

    Cons

Organization is run "Like herding cats" as one senior director put it, so some things does not leverage organization fully

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hard work is good to weed out people , but working smart gets better results for clients...

I have been working at McKinsey & Company full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The smartest people with the most structured thinking and problem solving skills. Learning through osmosis is great. Good working from home options for managerial support roles. People are quite authentic - not molded too much into a mold like the IBanks

    Cons

A lot of innovation and launches but can falter on the execution, ongoing maintenance and growth of an initiative. Can get too jargony to set themselves apart and arrogant attitudes of seniors more common than expected

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More aligned and communicated firm strategy - just having IMPACT too vague for such a large and dispersed organization

    Pros

Company values. Networking opportunities. Diversity among peers, people from different educational and professional backgrounds.
