Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at McKinsey & Company

ProsOpportunity to work on exciting, high impact projects with teams of intelligent and interesting people while having a relatively high compensation.

ConsOccasional long hours, lots of traveling, intensive work environment, high intellectual demand, frequent 360 reviews (although this can be good or bad)

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed to create assessment criteria for values during hiring and evaluation of current employees to avoid incidents like Galleon in the future.

I have been working at McKinsey & Company

Pros- challenging assignments
- work that makes an impact

Great Learning -- Great People

Engagement Manager (Former Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I worked at McKinsey & Company

Pros- Great projects: Assoiates drive the problem-solving, which means they get more experience faster than other firms
- Senior level exposure
- Lots of feedback, so you will learn
- Great knowledge management system - a goldmine of information
- Strong alumni network, which will help for years to come

Cons- "Client, Firm, You" ... in that order (i.e., you come last) :-)
- Work-life balance is non-existent
- Takes longer to become partner, and make the big money, than you might expect

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to innovate to stay desirable and relevant to the top talent that make the Firm great.

Great place to grow and learn the industry

Research Analyst (Former Employee)
New York, NY

I worked at McKinsey & Company

ProsChallenging work environment where you're surrounded by smart, motivated people and working on issues that are redefining companies and industries. As a research analyst, you get to see how different companies are facing similar challenges. You get a unique perspective on the industry.

ConsThe company has an always-on, type-A culture. The line between work and life is blurred because for many of your colleagues, they are one and the same thing.

Exciting, hard work, intelligent colleagues, and 24/7 attachment to your Blackberry

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Waltham, MA

I have been working at McKinsey & Company

ProsExposure to working on the most pressing concerns of the world's largest companies, brilliant colleagues, and a world class professional development program make McKinsey an interesting place to work. There is always opportunity to explore a topic that you are interested in, and intrapreneurship is encouraged.

ConsPrepare to disappear for a few years, the hours are long. Work is fast paced and always urgent. Brilliant people can be nasty to each other as they strive to get work done on a tight deadline and to advance their careers.

Great learning experience

Senior Associate (Former Employee)
New York, NY

I worked at McKinsey & Company

ProsAmazingly smart, capable co-workers
Intense focus on delivering results
Culture of cooperation and helping each other succeed
Opportunity to gain experience very quickly in many areas

ConsReal focus of the firm is on building relationships with clients and selling more projects
Most projects are on very un-inspiring problems like setting prices or managing call centers
Generally don't feel like you're making the world a better place, and sometimes are finding profitable ways to make it worse

Advice to Senior ManagementDrive for expansion and growth has led to taking on more and more projects, and developing relationships with more and more clients. This means less ability to pick and choose the opportunities where the firm can make an important contribution. Consider more focus, and less growth

ProsMost pure form of meritocracy
Tremendous learning curve

Wealth of resources

Pretty good salary (though not for the hours)

ConsToo intense
Really poor lifestyle, often driven by travel/work that isn't necessary
Clients often not capable of executing the strategies we give them, so less fulfilling
