Great benefits, not as open-door or family-friendly as they pretend.

I worked at McLane Company full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

This company has amazing salaries, benefits, and bonuses. If that's most important to you stop reading and accept the job! You'll be glad you did.

    Cons

One: This is a 50-hr, 7-5, butt-in-seat company; don't expect many flextime or telecommuting opportunities. Two: Managers are given massive leeway in running their departments; the standards you're held to will change depending on your boss and won't match other people. Three: Don't expect change; McLane is a market leader with a "we're pretty awesome as-is" mentality. Four: This company is not friendly towards working parents, family emergencies, or extended leave. They follow the law, but watch for dirty tricks and lots of talk about why you're not at work, working.

    Advice to Management

Be consistent and be more flexible. Trust your workers to get the job done. I worked here for years and watched 6 hardworking, business-minded people all leave because of lack of flexibility. There are better companies out there for balance.

I worked at McLane Company full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good pay for someone who just graduated high school or is trying to fill the gap between college semesters. Retirement benefits are pretty good and health benefits are really good.

    Cons

Management seems to be just pointless at times, job security is non existent, very physical work; adding out to very long weeks in the summer. (50 or 60+ hours) definitely not a place to try to build a career unless you are VERY qualified in which you probably wouldn't be applying for a warehouse position anyways.

    Advice to Management

Learn to enforce the same rules for all individuals, not just let the more "senior" employees slip through the cracks every time rate write ups roll around. Also pay closer attention to the "new guys" they do not always get the "good" orders to stay on par with others.

    Pros

Outstanding teammates in our department, my boss understood leadership vs. authority, solid benefits, co. vehicle.

    Cons

Extensive travel at times, upper management didn't always seem supportive or to understand what we were doing in the field.

    Advice to Management

Place more emphasis on the value and importance of customers in the field ( convenience channels) as they care about more than just cigarette and shipping costs.

    Pros

Ablity to advance if your willing to relocate. Big company but has the feel of a family owned busniess. Work life balance is good.

    Cons

Not many cons but if your not willling to relocate this might not be the company for you.

    Advice to Management

For the amount of work preformed the salary could be a bit higher.
