I have been working at McLarand Vasquez Emsiek

    Pros

Low employee turnovers, plenty of opportunities and challenging projects. The company takes pride in and puts out quality work. Employees are compensated for overtime(straight hourly basis) which in this economy is rare, particularly in this profession.

    Cons

Feels a bit segregated between the institutional side and residential side.
Senior Partners not as visible as they should be (although they are all very nice if you interact with them).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It would be nice if Senior Partners interacted more with employees. I understand they are busy running around trying to get work but once in a while just go around the office, meet the new folks and see how they are doing.

A company only driven by profit

I worked at McLarand Vasquez Emsiek full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

You get to work on complex projects. And you can make a lot of money working there.

    Cons

The leadership is unskilled and the opportunities to move up are stifled. You will not be treated fairly as there is no respect for the well being of the staff. There is simply a focus on making more money for the owners.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Making money is not all that matters in life. Treating employees with respect and encouraging growth and development are essential to lifting up the community in which we live. Leaders should mentor others so they can become the best they can be, not be cruel and demeaning and suffocating to the point of depleted spirit.

I worked at McLarand Vasquez Emsiek full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Good location next to the freeway. Top floor of building with the view of the airport and with natural light. Convenient parking structure nearby, in walking distance and free of charge. Fair wages and there's always snacks and lunch during random office meetings. The office is ethnically diverse. They offer money for new referred employee. Large cubical spaces for work, privacy, and personalization. Hard work pays off here, but beware of pretentious coworkers.

    Cons

Not the best and ethical place to work when principals aren't supervising. Every man for themselves. blame goes around behind the scenes.since staff is too busy outputting and revising the central file, credit of work is taken by the individual presenting it to the principal. Building designs are Sketchup push pull boxes, and nothing exciting.

Very profit driven production company. In an attempt to save time and headache, the project architect tends to withhold design considerations from principal and owner. Principals are too busy wining and dining with the owner. When they all realize there is a major problem, the project architects will often blame staff, consultants, contractors, and an out of control workflow as the deadline nears. employee turnover is not only based on this, but supply/demand of unemployed and employee referrals as well. They supposedly can't find good hires. Everyone leaves when a better opportunity comes around.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Realize teamwork is your best ally. Everyone is cutthroat after the recession. Internal relationships compromise overall project design and staff performance. Principals need to get off the phone, touch base with the team daily, and need to lend a hand every now and then to ease stressful daily staff work.

I have been working at McLarand Vasquez Emsiek

    Pros

Good place to learn residential construction. Most staff is knowledgable. Great for starters.

    Cons

Some" associate partners "are incompetent and do not live up to their titles. Senior partners need to interact with staff more. Appears very disconnected from the rest of the junior staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Re-exam the title of "associate partner" or "associate" as most do not live up to their title. Encourage more interaction between different work groups.
