I have been working at McMaster University full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great grad student environment, I had a phenomenal supervisor and got to perform interesting research and travel to a lot of conferences

    Cons

Work life balance as a PhD student can be tricky to find, long hours in the lab and a lousy pay (especially as an international grad student), lots of TA:ing

    Recommends

I have been working at McMaster University full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

It's a good choice to study engineering in MAC. The faculty members are awesome and smart and can give you help in the filed of researching. You can learn a lot here.

    Cons

The pay as a TA/RA is not as high as expected.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

In fact, the most of the institution including UofT, MAC and UWaterloo do not give high pay. Maybe this is the issue that the Government should concern.

I worked at McMaster University full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

The pay is great, and the work schedule is very flexible and not too time consuming

    Cons

Your experiennce may vary depending on the prof youre working for. Lets just say my prof was not the most organized person in the world and didnt respond to emails often so there were times I'd be in the tutorial and have no idea whats supposed to be happening

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Better organization would help

I worked at McMaster University part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Good people to work with in the department.
Very high grad student wages ($40/hr vs $25/hr for the same position in schools in the west coast).

    Cons

Not very well funded compare to similar ranked schools. Politics makes funding inefficiency apparent.
Department colleagues don't seem to be very close.
Young profs work young profs and old work with the old. You get the picture.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Less politics, more productive.

I have been working at McMaster University full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Flexible schedule, lots of vacation time, great supervisor, benefits galore!!! So many things that are positive

    Cons

Trying to find parking. Walking through the student centre around lunch. Too many students, not enough staff

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We have had a number of staff reductions over the last few years, and we haven't replaced any. There are so many more students than when I started, but only around half of the staff. Although everyone is great to work with, a real extended family, if we had more staff we would be able to help more students

Difficult to advance within the university without actually holding a professor position.
