I worked at McMaster University part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Good people to work with in the department.
Very high grad student wages ($40/hr vs $25/hr for the same position in schools in the west coast).

    Cons

Not very well funded compare to similar ranked schools. Politics makes funding inefficiency apparent.
Department colleagues don't seem to be very close.
Young profs work young profs and old work with the old. You get the picture.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Less politics, more productive.

I have been working at McMaster University full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Flexible schedule, lots of vacation time, great supervisor, benefits galore!!! So many things that are positive

    Cons

Trying to find parking. Walking through the student centre around lunch. Too many students, not enough staff

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We have had a number of staff reductions over the last few years, and we haven't replaced any. There are so many more students than when I started, but only around half of the staff. Although everyone is great to work with, a real extended family, if we had more staff we would be able to help more students

I have been working at McMaster University part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Generally the people that you interact with on daily basis are very nice. The working environment is simulating and the city has lots of potential.

    Cons

Commuting from Toronto is easy, if you were to take public transportation. If you are thinking about driving everyday, that might be an issue. Some areas in downtown and more to east may not be nice to live at.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The paperwork can be reduced. In all administrative steps, there are too many formalities included that make the whole process cumbersome if not inefficient.

I have been working at McMaster University part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

It is an awsome university with friendly staff. Great opportunity to learn about different research projects (not just your own) and you can get a feel of where is the limit of every technology. Not a fast pace environment (depends on supervisor).

    Cons

No benefits because I was not full time.
The offices can be boring without windows.

    Pros

There is good work life balance.

    Cons

Difficult to advance up the ranks, you have to have good contacts. Also, there is surprisingly high level of office politics.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please recycle the staff on manager roles as they get too comfortable and dont care enough.

    Pros

    Great benefits. Beautiful campus.

Feel badly for the custodial staff who are underpaid and were treated poorly in the last negotiations. Hard to watch waste happening - various ways, i.e. new software system being implement and it's going very roughly
