Poorly run company with a joke leadership team

    Director (Former Employee)
    Richmond, VA

ProsThe employees are great....that's about it.

ConsIt's a very hierarchical company...you don't dare go near where the leadership sits on the 9th floor at their Richmond HQ. They try to seem like a progressive company, but they are very old school corporate; they overlook great employees and promote their favorites; certain people are protected, even when they engage in bad behavior; they've been losing business so they are laying off people and not treating them with respect, not letting them work for a little while until their job goes away; they keep passing off healthcare costs to employees while employing a concierge doctor for their executives.

Advice to Senior ManagementClean house at the top...that's where the companies' issues stem from; treat your employees like you value them; don't keep executes around on "special projects" when they don't succeed at their job.

Good job until I got too old.

    Analytical Services Coordinator (Former Employee)
    Evadale, TX

ProsGood pay with possible bonus. Pay is comparable to petrochemical industries.

ConsNot family oriented. If salaried, then they have no respect for personal time off or concerns brought to them by employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake care of employees who have dedicated 35 years of service to you. You want employees to be dedicated to you but; you do not want to be dedicated to older employees.

    Confusion Rains

    Instructional Designer (Current Employee)
    Richmond, VA

ProsGood benefits and re-location package. Excellent 401K. Nice offices.

ConsToo many layers of management and lack of cohesive strategy. Strong 9-5 mindset among employees. I was hired to train employees in use of SAP. Unfortunately the company hadn't figured out exactly how they were going to use SAP, so there was very little actual work to do. Five or six people were hired at the same time as I, all in the same role, and most had left my the time I resigned. Shortly after I left, the company decided to outsource the whole IT department, so I would have been out of a job anyway.

Advice to Senior ManagementLet employees contribute to the extent of their abilities, rather than limiting them according to their titles.

Apparently could be a lot worse....

    Leadership Associate (Former Employee)
    Richmond, VA

Prosexcellent company vision, aggressive drive to achieve goals, reasonable bonus opportunity, good employee development if you meet the criteria. still offers better benefits than most. Very high level of integrity at corporate and individual levels. Environmental protection is deadly serious, as it should be and same for safety.
Transition from paper company to packaging supplier in transition. Morale good. Leadership heard from frequently about performance and safety. Good effort to make international presence known in South America, Europe and China.

Conssalaries tied to "market based compensation" or, in other words, they use the salary data that supports what they offer. If it differs from other data, then it is dismissed as faulty. Operating unit, or division leadership variable quality. Location morale in the toilet for some, top shelf for others.
Corporate overhead growing monthly. More vice-presidents than a bank, unknown number of managers, directors and VP's involved with strategy at all levels. Confusing and unknown value.
Political maneuvering worthy of a knife fight. Obvious star tracks and cast offs. Middle of the road for all but a few. Old timers appear to hold a lot of knowledge about doing business but succession planning doesn't appear to value them much.
Employee turnover encouraged. Every year up to 10% of salary workforce is, in theory, supposed to be replaced or moved another job. Intent is to skew Bell curve toward top end.
Punitive culture in most locations admitted to by some employees by unscientific sample. Toe the line and speak the company speak; you will do fine. Disagree vocally or on paper and see what happens.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet out of Richmond and visit locations. Hold town hall meetings and be seen. Company esprit de corps has been replaced with bottom line mentality. Good people now go home at 5:00 pm instead of drawing on pride of employment to stay and solve a problem.
