I have been working at MedStar Health full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Large company with many different opportunities to learn.

    Cons

Takes a long time to get things done because of the excessive chain of command. Pays about 20% less than most healthcare organizations in it's league.

    Advice to Management

Higher salaries and less chain of command tiers.

I have been working at MedStar Health full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great place to start out at. Easy to grasp information about tasks. Love the pay and the "leave time" process.

    Cons

You're expected to work as a team, however, this isn't equally enforced throughout.

    Advice to Management

If you keep one aspect "fair", keep every aspect fair, and keep it mutual for all team employees.

I have been working at MedStar Health (Less than a year)

    Pros

Educated staff and MDs. They have the intention of being a High Reliability Organization (HRO), the leader in the region for healthcare, take regular associate surveys to judge the culture and perception, but they rarely, rarely take action. They are experts at signing themselves up to 'Do the Right Thing' but are very, very slow on implementing or the 'Doing' of what they say. They have a lot of potential but very poor execution. When the hospital is experiencing steady growth every year the employees have experienced a whooping 2.5% increase. That's ok at best and should be increased when we are experiencing record growth in patient visits and charges and collections.

    Cons

Over confident Staff and MDs. Leadership does not believe in the growth for internal candidates. Only external candidates are seen as the next best thing. Leadership does invest in their work force. They have training programs but they are more or less for the organization to be able to check the box "Staff Engagement/Training Conducted". Culture is lacking, besides the facade of culture that HR/Marketing attempts to create. Unless you have the unlimited skill of inflating your direct boss's ego, you do not really have a chance to grow in your career.

    Advice to Management

Engage and increase the utilization of young, educated and engaged professionals. 40+ year olds are not the only individuals with solid business ideas or ability to run clinical departments.

I have been working at MedStar Health full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Very smart people in some roles. Flexibility to work from home when needed

    Cons

Egos abound. Sr management get last he bonuses. Does not trickle down 1.5% raise. They will keep piling the work till you crash and burn.

    Advice to Management

Listen to what staff are telling you and asking for. I am a Director and get treated with little respect. Say thank you. If you ask for input use it from time to time.

    Pros

Overtime is a plus. Flexibility in the work schedule is a plus.

    Cons

No opportunity because when you are good employee the management will block your endeavors

    Advice to Management

Promote because of ability not because you like them or they are either friends or family

I have been working at MedStar Health full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I work in patient financial services in White Marsh, MD. There is a lot of opportunity to grow and develop your career. MedStar offers tuition reimbursement for pretty much any field of study as long as you can transfer to that particular position within the company. They also offer a flex schedule which is great for work and personal life balance. Lastly, the paid time off is great compared to other companies that I have worked for.

    Cons

The compensation could be better, but the other benefits offset the low monetary compensation.

    Advice to Management

Continue to listen to the employees.

    Pros

MedStar provides great PTO time to all of their employees. You can almost get one day earned every two weeks, plus personal days and holidays.

    Cons

If you are looking for a company where you can excel and grow, this is not the company for you. The management prefers to hire employees that will not make waves and will follow orders mindlessly, even if they waste time. Many times associates are given directives that make no sense and will only "pass the buck" onto the next department so that the same problem rolls around through the many departments, unsolved for weeks or months. The big push is employee productivity, not efficiency.

    Advice to Management

The company is too large to change the culture there. If you want to just go for the ride and not make waves, then you are a perfect fit for them.
