I worked at MedStar Health full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Full Time opportunities, good money if you move up. Education Assistance, benefits.

    Cons

Tons of politics, there's the people who have been in the door and out the door and then the ones you have to deal with are the ones who have been there "20 years, 25 years, 15 years" that have their seniority (which is looked upon highly). You have to kiss rear to get anywhere and if you don't you will be blacklisted within the company. There's also favoritism when it comes to salary ranges. One person may be making $15 sitting next to you with less experience because they "know the manager" while someone else is making $12 because they didn't know anyone. It's definitely not based on merit. Also--get better training for specific jobs, universal training (with one trainer) doesn't work for everyone, try to find a way that benefits all learning types so people aren't fired or quitting all the time (high turn over rate).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop playing favorites. Hold more people accountable when they're repeat offenders. Accept the fact that you aren't perfect and make mistakes as well.

I worked at MedStar Health full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Sad..used to be a great, caring place to work. But has steadily gone downhill and future looks bleak!!

    Cons

Everything in the hospitals is now a numbers game. How do you treat a patient in 15 min?
-move them in and push them out. Dropping of medical services all around. Overworking the managers and staff. If they complain-they are let go. Fear and intimidation rule the day.
Smile to the public but cry in your office. Absurd working conditions but hide them! Absurd
budget analysis. Keep the Hospitals Top heavy with administration but reduce all your support workers to save money! Do phony straw polls (Employee evals) and because of fear nobody is telling the Emperor(Medstar) that he does not have any clothes on! Sorry State for Maryland as we lose major Hospitals in the Balto Metropolitan due to reduced or eliminated financial support from local, state, federal gov;t. and the worst part is nobody is hearing about this crisis!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start to REALLY listen to your support workers on ways to improve working conditions(not just lip service from your own group of yes people)

    Pros

Company is growing, Pay is good. Benefits are excellent.

    Cons

They will work you to the bone and get every last bit of you....Very much top down, layered management who pushes much down to the front line staff. Bonuses and incentive packages to the top....1.5 % raises if you are doing a good job. Avg work week 50-55 hours.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ask for input from front line. Sr. leaders should get to know staff. I am in a dept. of 15 and very rarely does the Sr. Leader talk to me...or seem interested in what I am doing. Invite a larger range of staff to get involved in committees. It's the same people all the time.
