Awesome place to work

Full Time Registered Nurse (Current Employee)
Leonardtown, MD

I have been working at MedStar Health full-time for more than 3 years

ProsWorking on Magnet status; good salary; excellent team; people really work together here and the managers work to improve the culture all the time

Consthere are many different skill levels, but this is true of nursing everywhere. It takes time to achieve Magnet status and there will trials and errors.

Advice to Senior ManagementSpend a little more time on the floor with staff. Allow for vacations in the month of December!!!

Overall, it is a good company to work for

Department Secretary (Current Employee)
Leonardtown, MD

I have been working at MedStar Health full-time for more than a year

Prosnice benefits, vacation and time off is better than a lot of places I have worked and the people are nice

ConsMost VPs do not seem to generally care about their employees... overpaid.. I can only speak about the hospital in Leonardtown.. not sure about the other hospitals.

Advice to Senior ManagementCare about your employees and what they have to say.... listen to them and don't treat them like a number

ProsYou can wear jeans 7 days a week
on metro red line

Consthe office is dirty/dusty
coworkers are very petty very fake and childish
not 'allowed' to advance to another position w/in medstar
no annual raise or bonus

Advice to Senior Managementwe do a lot and to not be given raises and/or bonuses is not a way to show ur employees you appreciate them for the hard work they do.

Middle Management Bullying in thed ED. MedStar St. Mary's Hospital.

Registered Nurse (Current Employee)
Leonardtown, MD

I have been working at MedStar Health full-time for more than 10 years

ProsFellow work colleages.
Stream lined physician group.
Providing excellent emergent health services to a growing citizenry.

ConsThe resources for the nursing staff is stagnant. The support for the nursing staff is nonexistant.
The patient to nurse ratio in the emergency room ranges from 1:4 to 1:5. There are no additional resources. It is one nuse taking care of 4 to 5 level 2's and level 1's. The nonemergent pt's are placed in an area called REMI. There the ratio is 1:5. The nurses are blamed when things go wrong instead of seriously looking at the work load. Middle management is not held accountable.

Advice to Senior ManagementTo middle management my advise would be to stop gosipping, stop blaming, stop the yelling, stop the cursing, and be a manager.

Senior Management does not want to promote people, quoted "too many people at VP level"

Director (Current Employee)
Washington, DC

I have been working at MedStar Health full-time for more than 8 years

ProsHealth benefits and vacation time are excellent

ConsSenior Mgmt lines their pockets with of millions of dollars but does not want to promote their best people to senior levels (VP and above). One of the stingiest enviornments I have seen.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't think you are fooling people with talk of valuing the workforce when people are not treated as assets, they are given tiny raises due to "poor economy" however MedStar has continued to gain huge profits through the recession. Management does not walk the talk.
