I worked at MedStar Health full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

They are a very welcoming community with hopes to move their nurses forward and provide them with the best orientation and education possible. I felt very supported as a I began my career as a nurse at Georgetown. I truly believe that this organization tries to live out its mission of Cura Personalis!

    Cons

None to report. Overall, I felt very welcomes and happy as an employee.

I worked at MedStar Health full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Specific excellent researchers, physicians, nurses, others. Time off and benefits. Teams try to work together.

    Cons

Corporate operates via intimidation. Pressure, lack of support for day to day work. Mgmt out of touch. Managers label each other. Poor managers there for life. Patient safety.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Values are not practiced by Management or Corporate. Staff know. Leaders don't lead.

Former Employee - Non-clinical in Washington, DC
Former Employee - Non-clinical in Washington, DC

I worked at MedStar Health full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Decent benefits
    - PTO accrual is pretty generous
    - Relatively easy to get desired time off (dependent on flexibility of manager)
    - Well respected hospital

    Cons

    - Impossible to get needed resources as a non-clinical employee
    - Not a lot of oversight from upper management
    - Parking situation is abysmal!
    - Very hard to get raises/promotions -- also dependent on manager

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Rather than constantly harping on what more WE can do for the hospital and how we can give to the hospital, how about doing a little more for US, the employees?

I have been working at MedStar Health full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Lots of opportunities for growth and just about every possible aspect of healthcare available. They really respect their RNS and the work that they do--realizing they are a major reason the system is successful.

    Cons

Commuting is a bear. The EHR is cumbersome and non-intuitive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look into a better, all-in-one EHR. The band-aid fixes to Cerner are painful. Every day there are 3 new emails on how we have to document differently. It drives some practitioners away.

I worked at MedStar Health full-time

    Pros

Most people were genuine to work with. There is great employee parking. The hospital provides a great atmosphere for meeting new people and networking. The highly recumbent this hospital beware of particular departments.

    Cons

People may pass off work to coworkers often to cover themselves. This department will throw you into work without properly training you. Learn to act like you know what you are doing to get through the day.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire more people and stop trying to condense staff.

I have been working at MedStar Health full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Working on Magnet status; good salary; excellent team; people really work together here and the managers work to improve the culture all the time

    Cons

there are many different skill levels, but this is true of nursing everywhere. It takes time to achieve Magnet status and there will trials and errors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend a little more time on the floor with staff. Allow for vacations in the month of December!!!
