I have been working at Media General full-time

    Pros

A leader in Broadcasting and Media. A staple in the communities we service. An ever-changing, growing company with plans to become number one in the industry are all good things in my book!

    Cons

Furloughs and layoffs ran rampant in the late 2000's and early teens. No real structure. The corporate ladder is hard to find. Seems like a lot of wealthy execs are at the top but haven't tried to connect with the every day workers since Marshall left the helm.

    Advice to Management

Create a real path to greatness. Employees need to know how to move up to the next level, having these standards will create a better company, bring in more revenue, reduce lay offs.

    Pros

Something new every day. Get along well with co-workers

    Cons

For a company that's in the communication industry, we're pretty bad at communication

    Pros

Good vacation package, some departments get to work from home.

    Cons

There are a lot of layoffs, furloughs, and pay cuts recently.

    Advice to Management

Replace upper management with forward thinkers, hire sales people that actually sell.

I have been working at Media General full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I enjoy working with my coworkers. I actually look forward to going to work. The work itself is not that stressful. My work site is in the South, amongst mild weather and low cost of living standards.

    Cons

The biggest downside is shift stabilization. Weekly schedules are rarely stable; most department employees are expected to maintain flexiblity as we run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year. But this is to be expected in this type of environment.

    Advice to Management

Higher pay with more responsibility. Better healthcare benefit packages.

I worked at Media General full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of opportunity to grow and have new responsibilities Company is a well-known name in news field From what I remember, the benefits were decent

    Cons

Furloughs and staff reductions (2008-2010) High-paid execs, but that seems to have been taken care of in the last couple of years It's not so much the company but the news field in general, overworked and underpaid employees

    Advice to Management

Recognize and appreciate what the people at each station do to keep the company going. Many people work around-the-clock, on holidays, and vacation for this career ... and are rarely compensated adequately. A little extra money, time off, or a pat on the back helps a lot.

    Pros

Great people. Good pay. Very good management. Loved working there. Wish I was still working there.

    Cons

In sales the down side is always missing goals. But, the goals were pretty fair.

    Advice to Management

    Happy with management

    Pros

Colleagues are wonderful, interesting people. Working in same building with TV station WFLA and website TBO.com provides good multimedia experience. Building is in nice location downtown with picture windows overlooking the Hillsborough River.

    Cons

Atmosphere a little depressing due to state of newspapers, shrinkage in newsroom staffing and news hole and continued threat of layoffs.

    Advice to Management

Management is probably doing everything it can in a difficult situation. It could perhaps do more to let employees know how much they are appreciated.
