    Pros

The people there are great and the atmosphere is relaxed. They are going through cutbacks. For someone lacking job experience and not looking for top dollar they are a good opportunity to build your resume.

    Cons

MG is a media company in a bad economy and there have been many cutbacks. In the second half of 2011 they mandated 15 furlough days.

    Advice to Management

You've been giving yourself raises while the company is going down the tubes. What does that do for morale? I bet you could find a better CEO for less than half the money. Evaluate the products that Digital Media is turning out.

    Pros

The job was interesting, varied and informative. My colleagues were the company's best asset. Everyone works hard to meet the common goal of a meaningful daily newspaper.

    Cons

Sadly, no one is buying newspapers anymore so there is a sense of futility in the newsroom. Waves of layoffs have sunk morale to a level of hopelessness. Management lays off productive, dedicated, long term employees like they were old news. Management doesn't have a clue how to save the newspsper so they lay off workers to boost the bottom line rather than cut the high paid decision-makers. As a result the newspaper suffers because there aren't enough people to produce meaningful content. Management is cold and clueless.

    Advice to Management

Reassess your approach to keeping the newspaper a viable product. Rehire some of the seasoned journalists you've laid off and reduce the number of highly paid upper management.

    Pros

Great Place to grow professionally. There are many benefits to working for #1 Newspaper, #1 TV station and #1 Local News Website.

    Cons

With so many changes in 2011 managers and employees were left wondering if their job would exist in the next week. They recently laid off 165 employees a week before Christmas. If you have a great year and bring in revenue over your annual budget you will pay for it the following year. To save money and even the playing field your percentage paid will be scaled down. You must work twice as hard to make the same as the previous year.

    Advice to Management

Trim middle management, empower and create incentives that motivate your employees, effectively combat regional competition, and invest in younger employees through management training.

I have been working at Media General full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The pay is ok, and they have air conditioning inside.

    Cons

In sales you will be surrounded by snakes, more everyone will smile in your face and then bite you in the ass if you let your guard down. Also It is one of the places that when you start and a assistant then you will stay as one. The only way to move around to something new here is to leave.

I worked at Media General full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great boss to work for, promoted several times. Was able to work with the growing digital group.

    Cons

Downsizing, good ole boys (promote those who aren't qualified to find a space for them. Few female leaders. Terrible CEO

    Advice to Management

Took too long to realize and make needed changes.

I worked at Media General full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

They usually would let employees leave a little early the day before holidays, pretty good pay, great insurance, and pretty good paid time off.

    Cons

The biggest con is the management at the station level. Crying out to upper management for help produced no results. Management needs to be firm.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees. The reason many are leaving is due to management. Hello! Why would employees be looking for other jobs! Please, MG, look in the mirror.

I worked at Media General full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Worked mostly on broadcast television and online side in sales as both an AE then management and they have valuable advertising products. They also value their clients and focus on service is good at the local level

    Cons

Still a newspaper, old school mindset to doing business that has been dead for at least 15 years. Too much old guard in decision making roles

    Advice to Management

Invest in identifying and developing your local and general sales managers. As these people go so go your sales revenue. Additionally break down the walls between on air, creative, engineering and sales, crazy how little we were allowed to collaborate inter department.

I have been working at Media General full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

I always had a fair amount of freedom. Do your job and you won't get bothered much. 3 weeks vacation after 3 years, 4 weeks after 10 years. You usually have what you need to work with, not much more. Pretty good benefits and PTO policy.

    Cons

Lots of changes at the corporate level, not sure if good or bad at this point. Small raises. Typical news media company. Lots of decisions being made by people who may not understand them.

    Advice to Management

Corporate restructuring currently going on - so not sure how that will change things. Make more of an effort to retain good employees.

I worked at Media General full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

My division was liquidated, so any pros experienced during my tenure are likely no longer existent there. It's possible, however, that the new owners of Media General (Berkshire Hathaway) are much more competent.

    Cons

Poor handling of finances and a inability to respond to the 21st century's new media landscape contributed to the collapse of my division.

    Advice to Management

Hopefully, the new owners were able to honestly evaluate the weaknesses of this company and make better choices. (Berkshire Hathaway has many more resources, so I assume this is the case.)
