Media General produces good journalism, but the company was not prepared for the digital age.

I worked at Media General full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Media General continues to be a good place to develop young talent among reporters and producers.

    Cons

There is no financial strategy for company web sites, so Media General depends on seasonal events like political campaigns and the Olympics as revenue generators.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please develop a digital strategy to take advantage of the growth opportunities that exist in that medium.

I have been working at Media General full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The compensation is decent, the co workers are great, and they have excellent on the job training.

    Cons

It starts with the interview process for the Classified Department. The 2 managers that are in charge make you think that you will be treated like an adult professional. Then when you start they micromanage you to death. When you try to approach them about this they say it's our way or the highway. Not a professional way to handle your employees concerns. Combine that with the fact that if you do manage to stick it out you go nowhere in the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Dump the mid level managers that have been in the same position for more than 10 years and bring in people that have a fresh perspective and some empathy for their workforce.

    Pros

Active TV news industry; Health Insurance Better than Average; Vacation Days; High news numbers; Sold off Newspapers!

    Cons

No raises; Furloughs; No opportunity for Growth; No bonuses; Pay is not competitive with market; Mismanagement and lack of communication within departments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get new management. Not adaptable to changes in technology/ways of doing things. Still run on "old school" notion -- news flash, newspapers do not run the media industry anymore. Focus on things in specific markets. Utilize Social Media more.

    Pros

Good Coffee, exceptional hours, good parking, professional atmosphere.

    Cons

Antiquated system and technology, poor management, lack of ingenuity. Takes two weeks to access reports. Too many chiefs, not enough indians. Far fetched expectations with out a firm foundation to work from.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Open your minds and doors to new ideas and spend some time and money in IT.

    Pros

There are a few good mid-level managers left, who somehow survived the lay-offs, and these managers are great to work for and have defended front-line workers as best they could.

    Cons

Massive waves of lay-offs have contributed to a cynical, dog-eat-dog culture. The pay is terrible and worsening. And management seems to be unable to cope gracefully with the Richmond Times-Dispatch's dwindling relevance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Concentrate on creating more niche market and hyper-local publications, online or print. Also, a restructuring of the entire classified advertising section is needed. Perhaps more free ads for advertisers are needed -- or something like the first X amount of lines are free, etc. It just seems pointless to pay for classified ads these days.

    Pros

They are spread out nicely around the south eastern united states. They have some nice perks for working in media and have lots of way to help other people.

    Cons

They have tons of debt, tons of news papers, and no plan on how to make money. Their is little growth and constant threat of lay offs and furloughs. Internal transfers are never followed up on and would rather hire local less qualified people then keep current people.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

They need a clear plan forward and stop asking employees for ideas or their money.

    I worked at Media General

    Pros

    - good people / coworkers
    - good experience in the field
    - ability to transfer to other properties within the chain

    Cons

    - economy causes leadership to place low value on journalists and content
    - rampant misogyny
    - constantly changing goals prevent solid foundation for action

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cutting content won't win back readers or investors. You need to find a way to reach those you aren't reaching rather than self-mutilating the company to try to survive with a dying audience.

    I worked at Media General

    Pros

Initially seemed like they were committed to multimedia journalism; decent benefits package; excellent environment to learn about how to work on other platforms

    Cons

It's corporate journalism to its very core, which ultimately means it's a bean counter-driven operation. Any talk of "multimedia" inevitably came down to a way to downsize the operation, forcing multiple jobs on one person, which led to an inferior product. Poor judgment from upper management in evaluating good journalism. Upper management tried its best to marginalize innovative, contrarian ideas that did not match up with theirs, as well as the voices of young people (ie, the people they are trying to reach the most), which is frustrating to see as the young public continues to laugh at their product and their subsequent and transparent attempts to be "hip."

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees at the worker level. Respect their input and don't put all stock in the ideas of a senior editor who hasn't left the office in 20 years.

    I worked at Media General

    Pros

Good ratings in the industry, fair benefits

    Cons

They have a great "pitch" to get you on board. Beware of the details they don't share. Be sure to ask how many people are there this year versus last year. Management style is from the '50's. The "boys club" reigns and double standard is rampant: men vs women. The exception is the female senior manager that has even the rank and file quaking in their boots; just because she can. They have absolutely no sense of customer service either. Digital journalists are hired and fired with not even 90 days to prove themselves. They do not have a progressive disciplinary policy; no warnings, just " they are gone" with little or no reason.
Absolutely without doubt, the most inefficient, poorly managed operation I have ever encountered.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I can't begin to give advice. My advice to applicants regardless of job function is look elsewhere.
