Pros
The benefits, such as health insurance and vacation/sick time, are unparalleled. Management is very receptive to employee feedback and the group setting is very personal and friendly. There is ample training provided. The food is awesome!
Cons
Starting salary is low compared to other companies in a similar industry (but this is outweighed by the generous benefits). The company is dead-set in their ways and are somewhat reluctant to change.
Advice to Senior Management
Be more receptive to suggestions from employees about how MEDITECH can change or evolve to better compete in the industry.
Pros
Insurance is good. They paid 90%.
Cons
Upper management never care about the lowest level.
Pros
The company provides great benefits and has an annual bonus. The work environment is great; people are friendly and there is open communication.
Cons
They do not pay enough. If they paid their employees more, the quality of the products would increase exponentially, so would their customers' satisfaction.
Advice to Senior Management
Offer higher salaries and hire externally for upper management positions if necessary. Some supervisors are just not competent enough but were given the position because they stayed at the company for many years.
Pros
-Excellent Benefits
-Fairly relaxed environment
-Good people/young workforce
-Locations throughout Boston
-Fairly flexible on vacation time as well as sick time
Cons
-Reluctant to change
-Old Software and practices
-Poor management (they only promote from within, which makes for poor leadership)
-Poor knowledge sharing within the company
-They try to milk as much as they can from you for the short time they know they will have you.
-Poor pay
Advice to Senior Management
I believe that the management team at Meditech could use some work. After talking with many other managers from various other companies it is easy to see that Meditech leadership can use work. They promote from within and this is their problem. What ends up happening is that people are promoted based on tenure rather than leadership skills.
Pros
Good benefits
Fun work environment
Very stable industry
Good leadership & coworkers (depends on the group - mine was young and laid back)
Great career path after getting a few years experience and leaving MT.
Cons
Salary is horrendous (and no the "great" bonus does not compensate for this).
Gossip dominates this place
Little room for growth/advancement unless you relentlessly kiss ass or are friends with your
supervisor)
Advice to Senior Management
Be open to change !!! Not every policy made in 1981 is still relevant today!
Pros
MEDITECH offers a flexible work schedule, great health care benefits, and a relaxed atmosphere. Theoretically, you could work your entire life with the company and never really have to work hard a day in your life.
Cons
Here is the thing: No one cares. It is a total slacker environment. The pay and raise structure is terrible. Promotions are purely tenure based. It is a total high school culture. People read your emails and they count how many pencils you take from the stock room.
Advice to Senior Management
Make promotions merit based and reward talent with decent raises.
Pros
5 cent soda, good food that you are not allowed time to eat.
The caf is good but they encourage you to eat at your desk.
Cons
The worst company I ever worked for, I quit during training period.
The turnover is unbelievable, the owner made his own method to calculate employee turnover that does not count people that quit before working a full year. Pay is a joke, I was the highest paid recruit in my class by far and still quit. They track your every move as you must sign in every time you change areas. The product is in the stone ages. There is little upward movement and managers make half of their pay recruiting new people.
The owner will not let you use real office software, as he insists that this is a "software company" and makes you use in house developed word processing and other programs that are straight out of the 1980's and cause many hours of extra work.
They will not let you use any sick days, they say that is your "long term disability".
I heard that they offer as low as 24K a year to start, they make you travel 2 weeks of the year for that slave wage.
The owner forces employees to buy private company stock, he lost most of that money investing in real estate.
Advice to Senior Management
Stop being a yes man-women, the company is a joke.
Pros
1)Benefits are untouchable by any other company. The is 90% paid Blue Cross medical, dental, and vision, gym facility, discount lunches, free coffee, tea, and soft drinks, discount dry cleaning, etc..
2)Most of the facilities have a lot of young professionals so the atmosphere tends to be very laid back and social.
3)Time off/Vacation is usually approved
4)The experience will get you a dream job with dream salary
Cons
1)Because they on hire internally you will start at the bottom of the barrell at an entry level position, which is not ideal for anyone who has a grad degree or has 5+ years experience. The reasoning is that most employees who have a senior level position never leave and thus you will never move up in the company. Also, just because someone has a moved to senior level position doesnt mean they are fit to manage...they may know the software very well, but have not capability of using effective managerial skills to motivate and train employees well.
2)Entry level = the most embarassing salary I've ever had. I am completely insulted by their offer, which is non negotiable.
3)Sometimes the social factor will backfire on employees. Try not to get caught up the "Meditech" lifestyle, because it will easily consume you. Everything about your life will change as far as friends you hang out with, possible romantic relationships, your scedule for personal life. Things like this will bring out rumors and other drama in the work place. I dont know from personal experience, but Ive seen it happen.
4)Training process is boring at first and then it will hit you like a lead brick. Also, those who train you can be quite cocky and intimidating when trying to relay the information back.
Advice to Senior Management
Take plenty of management courses, because you have no idea what your doing.
Pros
Low stress, Good work/life balance
Cons
Old antiquated technology. Software is mediocre jack of all trades software but master of none. The company sells a lot of software because it knows the political game and it sells to a technologically primitive sector. There is little room for technical growth or career advancement because of it. We also do not attract good talent also because of it. Hence our software will always be mediocre at best.
In the short term of course, the company will continue to make gobs of money, but how long will that last?
Advice to Senior Management
Partner with more dynamic technology companies and incorporate into our technology. Even look in buying them or build a new R&D team with the best talent and completely re-engineer the product, but that will be a touch ask.
Pros
For those that have ever had any job experience, you will be able to appreciate working for a company where you are respected, appreciated, and treated well. They have old fashioned values that are rarely seen in the world today, and it is a company that you can work at, for your entire career, rather than jumping from job to job looking for more. Just like anything in life, when you have put in your time and effort, you are rewarded. The rewards are flexible hours, profit sharing, telecommuting, more vacation time, as well as advancement opportunities, stock purchasing, and job security. The work environment is relaxed, and all of the buildings are beautiful. The cafeteria's are run by the same caterer, the food is great, and is subsidized by the company. I should also mention all drinks are free, and soda in the machines is just 5 cents. The company prides itself on the importance of family, and works with employees to create a good balance. There are three main events in the year, that make this an incredible place to work. The company picnic, the Holiday party, and year end bonus. The company picnic is like nothing you will ever see at another company as long as you live. It has puppet shows, magic show, pirate ship, horeback rides, food, rides, and drinks, as well as gifts. During the holidays, they give all employees a ham, turkey or lasagna, and have a Holiday party that has an unbelievable array of food. The year end bonus is the most anticipated day of the year, and is very exciting. When the employees do their job well, the company does well, and it will show in the bonus. It is a great incentive program!
Even as a new employee, the benefits are extremely generous as compared to other companies. I have watched many young employees quit, to work for hospitals, and more money, only to find they are at the mercy of the hospital budget. They are often the first to be laid off, as they are non essential employees. For those that take this as a first job, and see the salary as the only thing of importance, I guess they will need to learn the lesson for themselves. As you get older, your priorities will change, and a company that values the importance of life outside of work will have great meaning. The relationships you will form with long term coworkers, and the respect of a company that holds it's employees in such high regard, will become priceless.
As a company using proprietary languages, it is not feasible to pay a new employee top dollar just to get them in the door, when they realistically won't become productive for several years. Once they are productive, the salary will increase quickly.
Cons
The salaries should be raised somewhat, to adjust for the cost of living over the past several years.
Advice to Senior Management
Provide more continuous training to employees, as technology changes.
