I have been working at Mediware

    Pros

Mediware has experienced a great deal of growth primarily through acquiring companies in similar markets. This creates a great deal of opportunity both short and long term. Good employees are valued and the Management looks for ways to utilize them in different areas of the company as the needs change. A good place to be for specialists and even better place for generalists or specialists willing to learn new things.

The office in Lenexa does try to do some extra things for the employees, like lunches/cook outs, contests like a chili cook off or best salsa. The ice cream truck comes regularly in the summer and last year the office spent a day at the KC Royals game and there is an annual Holiday Party with food, drink, music, etc.

Most employees are helpful and willing to help new employees be successful.

    Cons

Performance expectations are high, but based on my expereince with other similar companies, they are not as high as other competitors, particularly in the Kansas City area. You are expected to work hard and at times that means more than 40 hours a week, but I would not call this a sweatshop. The parking lot is usually empty by 6:00 PM most nights.

High emphasis on cost management, which means spending money on anything is highly scrutinized and layoffs are common in the past few years. Most, but not all, employees that are laid off are not providing value to the company and if they are aware of the world around them, are not surprised when it happens.

Internal processes are generally not standardized or documented, making it a challenge for someone new.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be sensitive to the impact of rigid goals and metrics, as well as continuous pressure to manage costs. Focusing agressively on short term results will have adverse long term effects.

    Pros

A lot of the people are really great.

    Cons

IT groups are treated like dirt, understaffed and expected to work around the clock. Management ignores needs of employees to squeeze every dime out of their products and services and does not care that the customers suffer as long as it costs them less then making things better.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work on customer satisfaction the right way, empower your employees and improve your offerings before clients complain rather than after the fact.

I have been working at Mediware (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Time off policy as well as co-workers.

    Cons

Upper management refuses to listen to its employees. Corporate environment is dreadful. Yearly layoffs and they never replace any employees who leave on their own accord. We've gone years not selling systems in certain product lines, however the only ones who pay for it are the employees via layoffs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Listen to your employees.

    I worked at Mediware

    Pros

Mediware's corperate policies are aimed to providing a positive balance between work and personal time, and the company has very good benefits from time off to its health plan. The company also keeps it's technical equipment upto date making it relatively easy to keep up in the ever changing feild of technology.

    Cons

Absolutely no documentation for the software. Reliance on senior member's for assistance is frowned upon so new developers are often left out to figure things out for their own or fail quickly and find themselves without a job. The senior management also enjoy playing games with their employees to add additional levels of stress that are generally not required; this includes pitting employees against one another or a manager in order to ensure that employee's and managers have the right skills for their jobs. Manager's consistantly give conflicting orders and then accuse one another of trying to over ride the other, in the end the employee following the orders is punished because ultimately they were wrong for following the wrong instructions. Software produced for customer's is commonly sold to them before the software has ever even hit the design process.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please resign and allow for new individuals to take over and reshape your company. You have for years failed to achieve anything other then revenue, and while this is overall good for bussiness in the short run, when you run out of people who are capable of actually supporting your company's forward momentum you will fail.

I have been working at Mediware

    Pros

VERY Good Work/Life balance. Management is very receptive to the need for a life outside of work and encourages its employees to take care of their personal matters. Fairly casual atmosphere.

    Cons

Very little technical documentation which can be very frustrating for new developers starting out, and apparently there is little effort being put forth to rectify that situation. Very many other nuances that just add strife to the life of a developer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Documentation, Documentation, Documentation. There needs to be a streamlined process outlining system design decisions, the schema and layout of the data, as well as a one-stop shop for coding standards so as to encourage uniformity in the code base for maintenance sake.
