Pros
Medline is a consistent performer in the healthcare vertical and is constantly looking for opportunities outside of that vertical to grow in new directions. Good leverage of the competencies that have allowed growth in the past to launch efforts in new directions. Great innovators!
Cons
A lot of tenure/seniority here creates some challenges: opportunities for promotions are dependent on people leaving/retiring, and this makes it difficult to bring in fresh perspectives. But overall, I believe management tries hard to create opportunities where possible. Our growth does, occasionally, create new management opportunities as well.
Advice to Senior Management
Continue to maintain the level of quality that has put Medline on the map as Medline grows across the globe! "Think big, act small!"
Pros
Time off and accruing sick leave are available. A small bonus is offered. Almost impossible to get fired, watch some of the most worthless employees I've ever seen keep their job through all kinds of scenarios.
Cons
This job does not promote on ability at all. This entire company is based on who you know. Upper management has been there forever and its obvious they look after the employees they like. They watch your facebook to make sure you have no negative work comments, that is how uptight this company is.
Advice to Senior Management
Quit, and get some new blood in there before all of your talented workers quit and your left with the less qualified ones you promoted simply because your friends with them.
Pros
The company is making a lot of money, and you can earn some significant bonuses. Benefits are good; they actually have a progressive scale for the employee's share, so if you earn more, you pay more towards insurance. Tuition benefits are good, too.
Cons
Totally inflexible when it comes to work hours. Everything is micro-managed, and nobody trusts their employees at all. The family running the show knows everyone in the building, and has no problem yelling at anyone.
They tend to prey on young college grads, who are excited to have a ton of responsibility right off the bat, and only realize later that they are overworked and underpaid, and a fancy title doesn't make it a good place to work.
Senior management consists of one woman, one Asian guy, and 58 white men.
Advice to Senior Management
Make some real efforts to attract and retain women and people of color.
Pros
If you care that you get free donuts and coffee and a dry cleaner conveniently on site, then there you have it. That's about all the perks there are. There is a new gym that was recently built for employees, however you're too busy and drowning in work, you won't have time to use it without your manager frowning at you.
Cons
Unprofessional, disorganized, no communication, no clarity, no rhyme or reason, fly by the seat of their pants, impulsive, go-go-go environment, "do now, think later" mentality, lack of any culture, too much politics, oppressive-feeling, be-littling demeaning and bulling behavior from managers, no balance: all work-no life.
Advice to Senior Management
Focus more on employees, rather than your sales force. Take a closer look at your Division Presidents who boast about all their achievements, while keeping their people oppressed by their rotten bullying behavior.
Pros
There area good amount of young people. The company is continuously growing. There is a delicious food court at the office.
Cons
You are expected to work a lot of hours if you plan on moving up at all. There is not a whole lot of excitement to keep young people interested, especially being so far from the city.
Advice to Senior Management
There is a lot of micromanagement. I believe requiring leaders to attend on-going motivational and management courses would be useful.
Pros
The pay is and the bonuses are okay . On site cafeteria and health facility are nice as well. If you're looking for a stable economy proof job then you may be able to deal with the con's of the organization.
Cons
As other posts have indicated this is an extremely lean organization, and unless you are accepted into the inner circle there is zero chance for advancement especially if you are a woman. They tout the 100 Best Company accolades, but they hand select the employees who are polled (and who are told not to let unselected employees know the surveys have even been sent out). Senior Management consists of micro-managing control freaks who for whatever reason refuse to share information so you basically are forced to perform with one arm tied behind your back. As far as room grow forget it-I've watched way too many capable people get passed over and/or let go just to make room for someone that the corner office wants in their place.
Advice to Senior Management
Medline is not the only show in town. The economy will eventually turn around, so wake up before the talent you have continues to walk out the door.
Pros
Motivated work environment; ability to truly make a difference; solid foundation with lots of opportunity
Cons
Needs to focus on work life balance, but this is improving
Pros
The hard working and innovative are compensated well. Medline may fire you if you underperform, but I don't recall any layoffs.
Most of the leadership team is highly talented and will challenge you to be better.
Entrepreneurs can thrive in this environment.
Cons
Diversity is not important in the corporate offices.
Advice to Senior Management
Make diversity part of senior managements bonus plan.
Pros
VERY stable company regardless of what is happening with the economy. Great product line/business and the Very top people know what they are doing.
Cons
Promotions are complicated by who you know instead of your abilities. Often I watched as people had been let go and given an incorrect reason for doing so. I watched people be driven out simply because a friend or family member wnated a particular role. Management also believes that it does as it sees fit without an explanation to the individuals they do it to.
Advice to Senior Management
Truly understand who is good versus who talks a lot. Don't let the VERY good talent walk out the door simply because you want to give a job to a friend or family. I saw a lot of good people leave because of how deep the politics run throughout.
Pros
The company is middle of the road on everything. They have a great balance sheet and cash reserves but that's about it.
Cons
Communication is non-existant in the company and when you do get a answer call back and you will get a ddifferent one. Top management is very talented everyone else is poor to middle. Growth op's are limited by the lean nature of the company and change is trumpted unless your actually trying to change something. Work life balance....all work no balance.
