Former Employee – worked at Medtronic
Pros – Medtronic employs a lot of really bright people in all of their functions. It feels good to work for a company that's improving the lives and health of so many people around the world.
Cons – People with degrees from big-name schools seem to float to the top effortlessly. Hard work is not always recognized or appreciated. Work-life balance is not a priority. Many managers are unwilling or ill-equipped to guide their employees to success. HR is of little to no use to the average employee, if they have an issue they need to work out. Employee morale has suffered terribly after three successive years of layoffs.
Advice to Senior Management – If the top five officers of the company receive large pay raises in the midst of a terrible economy and a round of 1,500 layoffs, it sends a terrible message to your employees and stakeholders.
No, I would not recommend this company to a friend

Pros – great training, great name of the resume although it must be a different division that is run better
Cons – Good old boy environment. Policital and superficial. Promotions have nothing to do with talent.
Advice to Senior Management – Embrace diversity and think creatively.

Pros – career growth opptys, decent quality of facilities for employees to take advantage of, work life balance isn't too bad. Good mission.
Cons – Medtronic has become very big and slow to make decisions. Senior management of business units are slow to change the culture. Frustrating place to try to get things done, as decision making authority is held high in the org, and it's not clear WHO can make decisions.
Advice to Senior Management – Shake off some of the old guard who are so arrogant and not helping to drive change for the better. Find a way to reduce all the politics.

Pros – Great medical benefits, tuition reimbursement is 7K for undergraduate and 10k for graduate level employees. 401K match is up to 6%, Salary is competitive. Annual bonuses are contingent upon how your business unit performs for the fiscal year. If targets are reached, then you can actually receive more that your incentive target based on your performance evaluation as well. Free coffee, tea, hot cocoa. Every Wednesday, bagels, fresh fruit and donuts are provided. Company meetings are usually held over the lunch hour and are catered
Cons – We're in uncertain times, so of course Medtronic has to look out for their bottom line and if that means trimming some fat, then they're going to do so. Communication is lacking from senior management. Over the last year, many of the employees have found out about significant changes in the company through the rumor mill faster than from any management source.
Advice to Senior Management – Keep up to date with what's going on in this volatile environment and quit giving employees the same song and dance every time changes are occurring. Give your employees a little credit for being rational, thinking and intelligent human beings.

Current Employee – been working at Medtronic
Pros – Good company, solid cash flow. Fairly stable industry to work in. Good opportunity to advance, and the benefits are good as well. Although there are some layoffs coming up, in general, it is pretty secure. There are lots of bright, hardworking people at Medtronic, and people really seem to have a sense of accomplishment. Strong performance is generally recognized, and rewarded. It is a great company to have on your resume as well, and people are generally able to recognize the company name, no matter what industry they happen to work in. Plus, the company is sixty plus years old, and that gives some idea that they will be around for a long time.
Cons – Not too many. Because it is such a large company, sometimes you can feel a little lost in the shuffle.
Advice to Senior Management – Communicate information more readily through the channels.

Former Employee – worked at Medtronic
Pros – The prestige of working for a leading medical device organization. I always bought in to the corporate mission; it felt good to be part of that.
Cons – It appears to be highly dependent on the division you are in. The division I was in was poorly managed with fluctuating direction that made it difficult to meet targets. Annual reorganizations cultivated an overpoliticized environment that challenged deliverables. "Talent development" was all talk, no action. Seniority and experience were not valued or rewarded. Lack of long-term (and short-term) strategic planning resulted in "project/product du jour" which does not foster a sustainable revenue stream.
Advice to Senior Management – Get a better understanding of the value and strengths of internal technologies and how they can drive success, beyond and with core competancies. Leverage and foster a cooperative culture across business units.
Medtronic is a "sleeping giant" with so much talent and IP ~~ if they got it together, if they got their business units together and really unleashed the creativity and passion ~~ there would be no stopping them.

Pros – Good paying industry. Able to move within the company and change function.
Cons – Experience as employee is totally dependent on who is your manager and the quality of managers vary hugely.
Advice to Senior Management – Listen to the employee, not to middle management.

Pros – Great team to be a part of. Mission is actually a goal for employees, and something you can be proud of . Nice to work for the leader in the industry, and generally a great all around employer that is concerned about your total health and success.
Cons – Big companies always have management reporting structure issues. Much work is being done by multiple groups at the same time, with limited visibility across the organization.
Advice to Senior Management – Work hard to ensure there is visibility across the organization of projects and initiatives so we can work smarter.

Pros – Interesting and Important work. You know you are making a difference in Peopl's Lives. Job satisfaction, good pay and benefits. Agile development methodologies. Colleagues treat you with respect. Abundant resources to keep your self healthy and focused.
Cons – Too many Managers, blurred reporting structure.
Advice to Senior Management – One Employee should report to one or two other people. Too many managers and too many directions leaves the employees confused.
