I have been working at Medtronic full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The culture at Medtronic is very nice

    Cons

Senior leadership has a disconnect from the lower level employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

As a young employee, it seems like they don't care about your development

I have been working at Medtronic as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

Working for the contracting company InfoTree services. Decent pay through the contract company. Nice accommodations at the Mounds View office. Gift Shop, Cafeteria, Caribou, US Bank, Gym. They used to have a minute clinic anyone could use but now it's for employees only.

    Cons

Management recently underwent "contractor management" training and now I'm no longer able to do professional development like activities. Basically been told to keep my head down and do the job I was hired to do. All the classes I used to be able to take are now off limits, even if they directly benefit my job. The gym is way overpriced for what they have there. All-in-all, would be a great place to work for, as long as you're not a contractor.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't ostracize your contractors. They end up being your full time staff eventually.

I have been working at Medtronic full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Smart people, great industry, great perks, good pay. There are a lot of good people and it is nice to know your job ultimately helps improve patients lives.

    Cons

Politics, Career Path not clear, too much posturing. Promotions and opportunities seem to go to people who are good at politicking their way into senior mgmt's offices.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Focus on talent development.

I have been working at Medtronic full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

A great place for work/life balance.
You can set your own trajectory.
    LOTS of career opportunity.

    Cons

If you are a poor engineer they will move you into program management. This sometimes works out well. Other times, not too much.
Tolerate poor performers for too long.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Understand the RIF process - but you need to start keeping people that have the 30+ years of knowledge.

I worked at Medtronic full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Medtronic is a great place to work, offering excellent people, benefits, corporate offices and compensation.

    Cons

Upward mobility is limited due to contractions in core markets. Established ways of doing things rule and change is very slow.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Respond to the radical changes in the market place with radical new ideas. The burden of previous business models cannot be immediately removed, but if not addressed and changed future growth and even maintenance of current standing will be jeapordized.
