    Pros

The people make the business. Most are hard-working, goal-oriented individuals who are also very well educated. The pay is competitive and the business continues to grow and reinvent itself.

    Cons

Sometimes there are too many objectives to focus effectively on getting things done and they change frequently so you may invest time in certain objectives only to find the work product disregarded due to changing priorities.

I have been working at Medtronic as an intern (more than an year)

    Pros

The business side does well to make their intentions as transparent as they can. The benefits and salaries are generous, and the culture is relaxed. The work is rewarding, especially when you hear about patient success stories. The people are passionate about their job. Because the company is so large, there is opportunity to change careers without leaving the company.

    Cons

The size of the company means that most employees contributions are marginal in scope. The medical focus and regulation of company efforts can make development and other projects slow down significantly. Because the company is so large, the software is hard to change, and often out of date.

I have been working at Medtronic full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Competitive compensation, good overall benefits, employee performance is valued, work-life is well balanced, focussed company mission to help patients.

    Cons

Too much time in getting projects implemented...a board here, a board there to check, check and check. Not many opportunities for growth or promotions.

I worked at Medtronic as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Great place to work. Great environment, It is great to work in life-saving technologies with very special, very high end people dedicated to making a difference. They offer relatively good wages.

    Cons

Very unreliable (at least to temps) even with great (internal) work history and departmental recommendations. Keep your wage competitive. There are some nebulous destructive internal politics which keep employees stretched and overworked, which is why contractors are disposable. When a department hits some (political) wall, caused by internal upper management blind short sight, contractors are let go. They always have similar openings (same ones over many years) which seem to speak to the unreliable (temp) work environment and, or, to very high turn over. There is no concept of keeping work agreements with temps -"at-will" is all one sided! Possible age discrimination.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

"Contractors" who either decided to do contracting (for more challenge and increasing skill set marketability), or who find themselves without long term contracts or "permanent" positions, have even more to offer than employees who have done just one job for ten or more years -why do you hire contractors? Contractors are highly experienced people. They are flexible and used to just getting the job done. Employment gaps in their resumes speak to ruthless, cold company politics, outdated HR or other employee or HR prejudices against gaps caused by factors beyond all of our control. Employees fear for their jobs. Contractors already lost theirs, and are coping as best they can in this very poor economic environment. Hire them! Value them! Contribute in this way to your surrounding communities.
