I have been working at Medtronic full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

You will likely work with a lot of bright people, a lot of great opportunities for interesting projects if you are in the right field

    Cons

Like anywhere, some middle managers where it is really hard to identify their value-add. The company can be pence wise/pound foolish at times, throwing millions at a project that gets hyped to the point of being funded in a major way, only to be cancelled a couple of years later, while much more modest, straightforward projects with budget of 100K or less get ignored even though their value is straightforward.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on high-ROI, smaller projects. Ramp up high-cost, new programs more slowly to prove viability. Focus a bit less on acquisitions and more on growing and preserving the business you have-integrating all of these acquisitions have a huge cost associated with them.

I worked at Medtronic full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Rewarding in that I always felt like my contribution individually or as a team member made a difference in the product quality, availability, or access. Lots of investment in training every employee.

    Cons

Some managers got caught up in politics and persecuted individuals for ego sake. Lost good employees because of poor manager.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider having a true advocate for the employee. I was a 10 year plus employee with a wall full of awards and endorsements from others but ONE person had the power to sway HR. HR is not at all on the side of the non-manager. Worthless to even try to improve if a manager has it out for you. Not just me, happened to many others in my career. Its a shame because otherwise Medtronic is the best!!

I worked at Medtronic full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The salary and benefits are very competitive. The management fosters a very professional and inclusive team work environment. Managers recognize individuals for their performance. Middle management spends a lot of time in the facility and when they aren't there are usually easy to contact even outside work hours. Severance package was generous.

    Cons

Annual reduction in work force layoffs. Upper management located in Minnesota which sometimes makes project and performance not easily visible.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The work environment is great as is overall.

    Pros

This is a very strong company that you would be proud to work for. Benefits are absolutely amazing and hard to beat. Sometimes you can fall into a group that works well together and will really be true friends for a lifetime. easy to get to and from the office (great location).

    Cons

The work-life is balance leans a little more towards work in that you are expected to stay past hours to get your work done under intense projects and deadlines. Tough to get time off since it always seems that nobody can cover your work load. Bare minimum and sometimes under staffed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in a few more people per team so that everyone does not feel overworked and underpaid. Work a little more on home-life balance.

    Pros

Knowledgeable and friendly people. Flexible work hours too.

    Cons

Career opportunities are limited. Although there were many projects at our CA division, there were very few Core Team Leaders/Project Managers there. Most of the CTLs were back at HQ in Minnesota.

    Pros

Very innovative and provides services that help others improve their lives every day!

    Cons

Not much opportunity to advance within the company although it is heavily promoted.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To allow stellar employees the opportunity to advance into different areas of the business. Communication is lacking and only disbursed down on the 11th hour. Would be better to be pro-active rather than re-active.

    Pros

The pay was great along with the opportunity for advancement. Had a great experience there.

    Cons

Not a good place to make a mistake as they tend to quickly assign blame. Unfortunately they are very email based with limited face to face conversation.
