I worked at Meketa Investment Group full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Work/Life balance was excellent, I worked past 6PM only twice. Great opportunity for senior investment staff with families. Both occasions resulted in senior staff thanking me personally for my efforts. CFA/CAIA reimbursement and bonus. Occasional mid-day activities break up the routine.

    Cons

Pay was a significant issue, certainly well below average for a comparable role. Bonuses were mostly token in amount. This could be changing due to recent significant turnover. It was not clear that there was a set development plan for those at the associate level, besides taking over jobs that were left behind. No clear mentorship opportunities were available for junior investment personnel (this could be changing). Proprietary software was outdated and bug-filled for the most part.

    Advice to Management

Construct clear goals for junior personnel and make development/mentorship a priority.

    Pros

Collaborative work environment with smart colleagues. The company is small but growing quickly, providing opportunities for personal advancement for motivated employees.

    Cons

Management can be slow to recognize the need for change, and should invest for future growth.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the growth momentum and reward employees who contribute to the firm's growth.

I worked at Meketa Investment Group (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Any Investment management consultant position is a challenging role and a good place to be positioned for a long term career in the institutional investment management field. Meketa is as good place as any to get introduced to the industry, but solid advice to anyone looking is to not stick around too long on this sinking ship.

    Cons

Management is incompetent and this firm rots from the head down. Personnel are viewed as a commodity and as cheap aftermarket parts. Any financial upside is horded by a small coterie of senior partners. The firm's base business, serving Taft-Hartley multi-employer accounts, is a wasting asset and the rest of the business is "bought" by underpricing incumbent consultants. Who would want to buy this firm much less want to be a partner? A few, including partners, have already voted with their feet and waked away.

    Advice to Management

Rhetorical question: "Any surprise that massive defections at all levels plague the firm now that the recession has passed (which locked in the best for just a short while) and ample jobs are readily available elsewhere?"

    Pros

Really smart people, somewhat flexible schedule, a really good group of active people outside the office. Challenging and fairly autonomous work environment; employees are allowed to run with their ideas, really interesting client base

    Cons

Growth of firm means more cooks in the kitchen with respect to management, lower level positions tend toward burnout if employees aren't engaged in looking for growth opportunities. As with any job, your manager has a disproportionate impact on your success or failure and overall job satisfaction.

    Advice to Management

Focus on developing lower level employees into long term contributors

    Pros

Generally, nice people to work with. Produce high quality of work for clients.

    Cons

Company "management" (if you can even call them that) is utterly incompetent. If you have an issue, good luck getting anyone to listen or respond. Everything is their way or the highway. There's a reason that turnover in senior investment professionals is skyrocketing and its probably not over yet. My seven year old could better manage this place. Compensation? Ha! Senior Partners take most of the money and leave everyone else with scraps.Just replace them with cheaper parts if they leave.Offers to become partners are a terrible deal.

    Advice to Management

Find someone to appropriately manage the employees. They are the value of your company, and you don't seem to know it. And if you do, you don't seem to care.

I worked at Meketa Investment Group full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The firm provides a good/work life balance mainly to compensate for the lack of compensation. They are also flexible as far as scheduling goes. This is also likely due to the lack of compensation. The employees are generally smart and well educated.

    Cons

There are many problems at the company. Compensation is terrible and the opportunity for career advancement is even worse. Motivation is difficult when there is really no incentive to work hard. Some employees seemed to be working part time hours despite having senior titles. Turnover at all levels, even at partner, has skyrocketed and most would likely attribute that to poor compensation. Senior management views everyone as replaceable and the turnover will likely continue. The CEO seems to spend more time abroad than in the office and no one is really clear on how he adds value to the firm.

    Advice to Management

Review your compensation policies and provide incentives to perform at a high level.

great work life balance, flexibility in work hours, very smart co workers, beautiful offices in Carlsbad with a nice view. lots of different opportunities for projects that are outside the standard scope of your job.

    Cons

small company means that some things are decided by a few key decision makers, growing pains are likely to continue, but overall, a very positive experience.
