Pros
Great resources and some of the best healthcare practitioners in Houston
Cons
Downsized some areas that did not need it
Advice to Senior Management
Before downsizing you should personally look at what is happening rather than take advice of some who may not be quality leaders
Pros
Name recognition of the Hospital
Cons
Poor planning
Lack of value unless you are a doctor
IT staff are evaluated like clinical staff - that's just plain stupid.
Advice to Senior Management
Empower the employees to solve problems in a localized way. One size does not fit all. Recognize those to do their best against great odds in a real way.
Pros
12 hour shifts, full time compensation for working 3 twelve hour shifts. Ok, benefits. Get good PTO hours, spiritual days, etc. Not for profit
Cons
Huge corporation, management is a mouthpiece for doctors. No one listens to the employee. Employees don't have a word. Management is always changing and when you finally get a good manager, they don't stick around, they leave.. not sure what the inside reasons are for that.
Advice to Senior Management
Treat people with respect. Listen to your employees. Treat everyone fairly. Give ample opportunities for learning and growth.
Pros
Flexible scheduling, benefits from day one of employment.
Cons
Plenty call-ins which causes your workload to increse (unhappy employees call-in), I recently graduated from a medical program and was told that I couldn't get a transfer into my new profession because I didn't complete my internship there; therefore, what's the use of tuition reinburstment or even trying to further your education if you can get a job at the hospital you already work at when there are open positions? At Herman, it's not what you know, it's whose "posterior" you are kissing. This place is not a best place to work. Plenty of politics!
Advice to Senior Management
Let some of the air out of your heads...I don't think Dan Woltherman is aware of all that goes on. If he does, that explains why the hospital is being ran the way it is. Your only as strong as your strongest link!
Pros
Salaries are competitive for the market.
Cons
Poor management, money hungry motives.
Advice to Senior Management
Not confident that any advice would be adhered to.
Pros
Good salary for an EMT
Cons
Busy busy busy busy busy
Advice to Senior Management
No negative feedback to tell management. The more employees that we have, the better. Keep on hiring more technicians. We need them!
Pros
It's a busy tertiary hospital and major referral center for stroke and trauma. We see complicated cases here so it's a great learning environment.
Cons
Like all hospitals, the management isn't the greatest. It's run by MBAs or former lower level practitioners who really don't understand the complexities of medicine which is frustrating as a physician. Also, the ancillary staff are not successfully incentivized so there is a high turn around we soon lose them once they gain enough experience.
Advice to Senior Management
You need to incorporate physicians on the management level. Former NPs or PAs with subsequent MBAs will never truly understand the MDs perspective or the intricacies of medicine despite your fervent protestations. Therefore it is difficult to gain our cooperation or sympathies on difficult matters.
Pros
Largest hospital system in Houston.
Cons
bad management and low pay
Advice to Senior Management
Management only cares about making money. They do not care about their employees or the patients. All they want is to make sure you collect money from the patient. They have no problem turning patient s away if they can not afford to pay,
Pros
Employees are collaborative, quality and safety focused. The organization has an employee fund in place that helps those employees experiencing a crisis by providing financial assistance. The organization is being proactive regarding health care reform.
Cons
Upper management says they care about retention... but are not loyal to long term employees. The organization forgets that employees are valuable and without them the organization could not function. The play lip service to the employee satisfaction survey.
Advice to Senior Management
Remember that empathy is an important part of health care and to create this type of environment employees must fee that the organization cares for them. Do not do away with the aspects Memorial Hermann that encourages caring.
Pros
A very proactive company that keeps up with the changing healthcare environment.
Cons
The employee bonus program is not meaningful and employee recognition is lacking. Professional memberships and education are not paid for.
Advice to Senior Management
Make changes to positively affect the work environment. Take a closer look at system level executives and their turnover rates. Groups that are turning over there entire staff every two years should be looked at more closely. Obviously something is wrong.
