ProsMid-level managers here are hard-working, intelligent, forward-thinking, good people. They are ambitious and almost all of them pursue graduate degrees. It would be great if the company would develop them into future leaders... but this doesn't happen and these people invariably leave for better opportunities elsewhere.

ConsThere are no opportunities for advancement here. Sure one issue is that no one leaves and so their jobs don't open up. But the bigger issue is that there is no professional development of any kind; there is no grooming of people to fill/replace/add important positions. The company doesn't even try.

Some senior administrators are unethical and intimidating, and this behavior has been tolerated and encouraged. They get away with anything. When employees see this behavior (and it is very, very visible), it reinforces the notion that there is no fairness and no consequences for bad behavior. Moreover, these leaders are the very people chosen to "mentor" other people here. It is a joke.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet rid of the old guard. The persistent, pervasive culture of intimidation will never fade otherwise. Actively look for fresh talent. Stop letting politics get in the way of doing the right thing.

Current Employee – been working at Memorial Sloan-Kettering full-time for more than a year

ProsFlexi-timings. Good health care benefits. Nice location

ConsLow salary. Low growth in the job. Departments are all in chaos with regards to interaction and knowing what the policies are. Too big. Bad child care and housing benefits for Research Scientists.

Advice to Senior ManagementIncrease salaries for senior research scientists. These people work hard to do research and they dont get even the benefits that post docs get. How about housing and day care eligibility in Roosevelt island ?

Former Employee – worked at Memorial Sloan-Kettering full-time for less than a year

ProsThe patient's are what keeps you going; you bond with them during a difficult time.

ConsThe salary is low for the hours/amount of work, little room for growth, staff tattles on every little thing to get you in trouble, very cliquish colleagues, disorganized management, and so on. If you work as a session assistant on a four day work week expect to be in as early as 6:30am and stay as late as 10pm. The hours are crazy.

Advice to Senior ManagementBetter pay, don't be so judgmental, listen to your employes on both sides of the fence, organize the schedule better, and don't expect people to be able to work 14 hours and arrive at 6am the next day in great form.

New York, NY

Current Employee – been working at Memorial Sloan-Kettering full-time for more than a year

ProsStrong scientific team, especially in the cancer field;
close collaboration with the other two institutes Rockefeller University and Weill Cornell Medical College which are cross the street;
many hospitals around, which promotes both basic and clinical research;
it's in the Manhattan, which is full of passion and good for entrepreneurs to pursue biotech business

ConsThe salary would not be very high for the research postdocs or technicians, but which is a common thing among all the research institutes in the United States

Current Employee – been working at Memorial Sloan-Kettering full-time for more than 7 years

ProsGreat institution that cares about its patients and employees. Fantastic support from supervisors and managers. Employees in my department are the most dedicated, mature and intelligent that I have ever worked with. Benefits such as vacation (4 weeks) and insurance are good. Great cafeteria. Clean professional environment. The only place for cancer care is here!!

ConsSalary could be increased for the quality work that is performed each day. However, overtime does help a bit!

Advice to Senior ManagementThe hospital is top-tier.It seems you truly appreciate everyone in the MSKCC family. More brainstorming with the dedicated staff could be beneficial. A 10% salary increase would be very fair and reasonable considering Manhattan's high cost of living, especially compared to the off-sites. Parking is expensive and could be subsidized more. A 4 day work week could improve things even more, if that is possible. Keep up the great work!!!
