Prospeople, benefits, interesting work, making a difference; Enlightened academic institution allows for creative, intelligent people to flourish and contribute to an important goal, curing cancer.

ConsCommute, expense of commute; Not much more to say about cons. Any job has cons related to deadlines and stress. Knowing that you are working for a non-profit and helping patients with cancer is a good way to deal with any cons.

Advice to Senior ManagementProtect trust people place in this institution and continue making decisions based on sound reasoning and enlightened consideration of future of this field.

A very high number of disgruntled workers in the Department of Laboratory Medicine

    Information Technology (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsThe salary is competitive and the employee benefits are very good.

ConsThe leadership and administration for the department is unorganized, unethical, unprofessional, and malicious. They lack the necessary skills and knowledge to successfully lead a team or any projects.

Advice to Senior ManagementInclude your staff’s ideas and suggestions in departmental projects and initiatives.

My experience was good yet micromanaged by supervisors.

Physician Office Assistant II (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsVery good health benefits, 403B, vacation

ConsAdministration tends to micromanage their employees, no consideration toward seniority

Advice to Senior ManagementEmployees will work better if there is not a supervisor/manager over their shoulder constantly. Trust works both ways.

    Very good experience at MSKCC

    Research Project Coordinator (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsThe benefits are good (especially tuition support), and the culture is really great. I felt very valued as an employee and believed in the mission of the organization.

ConsIt's hard to start in an entry-level position (especially in clinical research) and then move up the ranks; there are lots of people looking to move up and not that many jobs. However, I felt that management was clear about this when I was interviewing - at the entry level, it's often somewhere that people will work for a few years and then leave to go back to school. That said, there were a LOT of people at MSKCC who had been there for 5, 10, 20, even 50 years, so this may have been unique to my particular position/track. Starting salary is low.

    An amazing summer research position

    Summer Intern (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsI worked side by side with some of the most impressive physicians and researchers. The research is cutting edge and I felt like I made such an impact on the work that was being done in the lab.

ConsThere was nothing that I would change about this summer experience. It was perfect for someone commuting and there was no downside.
